Following from the threads on boat insurance I got prompted to have a survey (in Spain) which is required by Craftinsure for my near 20 yr old Sealine S37.
Thought I’d share the quote which was €350 which was kind of what I expected.
The boat will be out of the water for its annual scrub anyway so no lift charge.

Is that just an insurance survey?

Actually I was rummaging about recently and found the craftsure ( Nov to Nov ) policy which as you know is a no thrills N+G ( Zurich) architecture policy .
£667 .
Colemans we’re at £1100 , Pants £2400 , and others circa £900-1200 Some of the others required a survey too .

Also upped the value , it’s official now the insured value accepted is 40 % greater than the BoS .Got it in writing in a format they ALL underwriters accept universally = a insurance valuation/ report . Might be handy when shopping around in the future .Evidence that sun insured exceeds the BoS .I think so .

So it kinda self funds itself with the saving in the first year out of the 5 it’s valid for at the mo .

Obviously there’s a dice shaking element of the surveyor finding a costly thing to replace / fix / put right .
Buts this is a separate debate and will gather mixed views .Personally for me I wanna know what’s wrong defective for piece of mind on three levels .

1- we are safe !

2- There is a greater distance of a claim refute in the future. The “maintenance/ seaworthiness “ weasel words all policies have in .
You are making it easy for there loss adjuster to refute , if a surveyor post claim produces the only piece of professional advice/ report which slags off the boat maintenance ……in the event of a large claim .You have nothing except a box of prev bills form the yard etc .

3- Residual value going Fwds .I think it ( period ins valuations ) hold that up .

a few years ago I took out a policy that unknown to me at the time I took it out required a survey of the boat (which was 12 years old at the time) .

So when they said it required a survey I was a bit surprised, I said if they require a survey I'll go else where for my insurance - they dropped the requirement for the survey and were happy to accept recent photos of the boat instead. full hull out of the water, detail photos of skin fittings, outdrive etc

Are the any justifications out there for NOT having a timely marine insurance survey ? ………..Anyone ?
yes, if another insurer will insure you without the survey for similar cost (or even slightly more) and similar levels of cover - why go with the insurer than requires a survey - seems like a right pain and unnecessary expense to me.

If all insurers will require you to have a survey, then you have no choice.

You have to ask yourself why they want a survey.
It will, almost certainly, mean that there will be some remedial work/costs.

AFAIF, they will require more surveys at 5 year intervals after 20 years

To be honest I am fearing a list of unexpected (maybe expensive) jobs. I know I should be grateful that these are pointed out but I might find it too much to be completed in just a few months.
My ‘get out of jail’ card would be to cancel Craftinsure and go with Curtis, who I know you favour, and sort out the jobs at my leisure.
Bit of an expensive exercise if I went that way but I know I wouldn’t have a survey unless forced.
Lets just hope for a ’light’ survey.

It would be remarkable if a survey found no fault.

I had a pre purchase survey when I bought my boat in 2014 . The survey revealed a number of faults . Insurers have asked when the boat was last surveyed. But no insurer has asked to see the survey report.

Do insurers really require all faults discovered by a surveyor to be made good . Or would they really only be interested in the content of the survey report in the event of a claim?

I'd be interested to know what they would insist on being repaired ,I presume it would just he items that if they failed would/couldresult in a claim, rather than things like the trim tabs don't work.

Craftinsure say about the survey “……..with all recommendations complied with”
i guess they need to keep it simple and it would be pointless to just have a survey which you didn’t have to take any action on. However it does potentially introduce for me more problems than it solves.

I'd be finding a different insurer that don't require a survey.
