\'Quiet\' outboard motor.

Oxymoron maybe, but I am seeking the quietest 4hp on the market. Any personal reccomendations? (Not electric)

Re: \'Quiet\' outboard motor.

I had a Yamaha 4 stroke 4HP which I found very restful. The Honda 5HP I had before was harsh and rattly.
The perception of noise is as much to do with vibration and pitch as the volume.

Re: \'Quiet\' outboard motor.

It also depends what you use it for.

We have had a 6hp suzuki 4 stroke for the last 2 years. This has a single big cylinder which makes it hard to pull. Reasonably quiet in a trobby kinda way. It is heavy and all the normal problems with moving the engine around especially as we wanted to take it home and back in the car (hard to do with oil going into the cylinder).

We have replaced it with a Yamaha 3hp 2 stroke and its great. Quieter (in a whiny sort of way), easy to start and transport. As it is a 2 stroke, it doesn't like to sit at idle for a long time.

For me, a modern 2 stroke is best.

Hope this helps?

Re: \'Quiet\' outboard motor.

I thought 2 strokes were forbidden a couple of years ago by the EU pollution police, but I still see 2 stroke generators in B&Q, Lidl etc. Did they change their mind?

Re: \'Quiet\' outboard motor.

2 strokes were not forbidden, they just had to comply to emissions regulations which were introduced for 4 strokes the year prior. Old stock could still be sold.

Re: \'Quiet\' outboard motor.

I think it inevitable that a 2 cyclinder o/b is going to be smoother quieter than a single. 2 strokes also are smoother /quieter.

A friend has replaced his volvo V8 stern drive with a Mercury 350 V6 o/b and that really is quiet. You have to listen carefully to determine if it is running. Mind you at the price I reckon I could buy a very nice keel boat with diesel s/h. olewill

Re: \'Quiet\' outboard motor.

The last Yachting Monthly surveyed 4 strokes and electric ones. The quietest were electric, but the power was pretty pathetic. That YM should still be in the shops - probably worth looking at - they tested them all for noise.

Re: \'Quiet\' outboard motor.

Thanks for all suggestions. Does anyone have any thoughts on Hondas? My elderly Mercury sounds like a bag of spanners, even on tickover. I want to replace it with something one can converse over whilst cruisin up the river when this glorious summer arrives.

Re: \'Quiet\' outboard motor.

Suggest you remove the spanners! Seriously if you can find out what's rattling away, it'll be much quieter.

For example my Evinrude 4hp twin cylinder 2 stroke was making a horrible row until I discovered that the flywheel was banging away against something to do with the ignition system that had worked loose.

It was lovely and smooth beforehand, and is again now.
