Re: Quiet night in Llanbedrog - until two boats started their generato
If you have twin alternators on your main engine you don't really need to run a genny much, if at all, a 120amp for the domestic bank and a standard 80amp for the starter battery is pretty normal, and with an intelligent charging system, running the engine is not required for long, and as I said in my previous post, for a sail boat a bit of motor sailing during the day obviates the need of a generator.
A mobo just does not have an issue with the above, as it's engines are running all the time it wants to go anywhere. ergo, it's battery banks are, or should be fully charged all or most of the time. Something like 6 130 amp hour AGM batteries will supply most everybodies needs via an inverter, and 3.5 kw is about average for most peoples needs, of course you can also fit you engine with an Electrolux travel power 240 volt AC travel pack alternator which again gives you even more options, these come in 3.5kw, 4.5kw, and 7.5kw as far as I know. So for a Mobo on the move it's main engines can provide 240 volts to all domestic appliances, and when stationary the inverter can take over.
Like I said before, all this sort of gear has been pretty standard on Narrowboats for years.
