Quiet night in Llanbedrog - until two boats started their generators:(

Re: Quiet night in Llanbedrog - until two boats started their generato

If you have twin alternators on your main engine you don't really need to run a genny much, if at all, a 120amp for the domestic bank and a standard 80amp for the starter battery is pretty normal, and with an intelligent charging system, running the engine is not required for long, and as I said in my previous post, for a sail boat a bit of motor sailing during the day obviates the need of a generator.

A mobo just does not have an issue with the above, as it's engines are running all the time it wants to go anywhere. ergo, it's battery banks are, or should be fully charged all or most of the time. Something like 6 130 amp hour AGM batteries will supply most everybodies needs via an inverter, and 3.5 kw is about average for most peoples needs, of course you can also fit you engine with an Electrolux travel power 240 volt AC travel pack alternator which again gives you even more options, these come in 3.5kw, 4.5kw, and 7.5kw as far as I know. So for a Mobo on the move it's main engines can provide 240 volts to all domestic appliances, and when stationary the inverter can take over.

Like I said before, all this sort of gear has been pretty standard on Narrowboats for years.

If people can't voluntarily keep the noise down, then sooner or later there will be byelaws, persons to enforce them, charges to pay for it all....

Havent answered the question, how long did they run them for?
Also I re iterate, who is to be the arbitrator of what is "good"? As it happens I anchored off SCYC on Saturday, after the petrol heads had gone home we invited some friends off a neighbouring boat on board and softened a few bottles of wine. There was a couple of Bene 50s moored nearby and an older ketch. Someone had a genny running, it was that unintrusive that I couldnt even tell which boat had it on. Didnt bother me, didnt bother my friends. I sat in the cockpit at midnight looking at the stars. Magic.

Ran for at least a couple of hours if the time matters.
I'll re-iterate that if it was unobtrusive then it wouldn't have mattered would it?
There were other boats in the vicinity who were just as p1ssed off as me. One was about to dine in his cockpit with his family but had to go below because of the noise from the mobo gennie.
Anyway, I'm happy to have proved to myself that it's not just me being grumpy. The SILENT majority seem to be of the same mind.

I always try to enjoy my hobbies without inflicting any unnecessary disturbance on others - glad to see i'm not in the minority. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Three suggestions

1. TV's can be watched using inverter rather than Geni
2. Great thing about boats is ability to move if you don't like the neighbours
3. Throw a packet of bird seed on offending boat's grp once the dew has wet it, plenty of little kango hammer beaks at 5am next morning. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
