Quite probably untenable in any NW wind but calm and superb when we were there.

West coast Barbuda on one occasion; Halkidiki Peninsula didn't see another yacht for two weeks. Many of the Venezuelan out islands.

Some nice suggestions so far.

Here's mine:

Bay of Biscay 10M west of the Ouessant TSS in September 2010 - when the combined weather forecasting services got it VERY wrong! And no annoying neighbours!

Taken from the unattached rubber dinghy with only one working oar as my athletic crew managed to break one of two supplied.

I'm in one now, not 15 miles from Auckland, NZ.

Its not just the place but the time. I used to cruise the Thames Estuary every year through the Xmas hols.
All the regular anchorages were empty. You just need a yacht set up to keep you warm!

Yes - I thought I recognised it - we have been alone in Ag Giorgiois (adjacent?) even in July/August

Quiet Anchorages

We thought we were the only ones who attracted other yachts to anchor so close to us that they could bash into us - even though there was plenty of place elsewhere!

If anyone comes so close that we might collide I let them see me taking photographs of their yacht! (Could help in an insurance claim should the need arise)

Quiet anchorages

How about this for the ultimate getaway anchorage? I believe the yacht had overwintered here, alone in the Antarctic!

Can anyone tell me who this might have been? The photo was taken by a friend (since died) in November 1999,
on the Antarctic Peninsula. He was in a party checking out a small abandoned British hut - pic below - which
the solo sailor had been using through the winter. Possibly on Deception Island, but I'm not sure.

Two very different locations:
'somewhere' on the east coast of Lussino/Losinj (same bay but on two occasions)

Seno Garibaldi, Chile(saw no boats for 2 weeks...!)

It is interesting the desire of many people to crowd around a particular spot in an anchorage.
I wonder if it is something in the human condition to feel safety in numbers. I know I have arrived at an unkown (to me) anchorage and having made a rational decision by looking at charts and pilot books, to anchor in a particular spot, start to question that decision if I see no one else there but several other boats anchored together a couple of hundred yards away.
I then go through a ritual of double checking everything and very slowly approaching my desired location with one of us keeping a look out. Having then dropped the anchor and bedded in will still worry that there must be something wrong with the spot or why would no one have gone there. In the med I will also dive down to check and only when I find all is ok do I relax that I have made the right decision . Sure I must have OCD.
As others have said you then get the next few boats come and join you, oh well.

Windy!

I wasn’t there, but nearby, anchored off Paros. The forecast was as bad as have seen it, but fortunately winds in the anchorage were only about 45k with gusts to 55K. Some of the large ships outside the protection of the island were reporting steady winds in the 65 to 70K range.

Looks to me like it could be Trevor Robertson on Ironbark. I never met him but I know some friends of his who were down there one winter in Express Crusader - the origonal Van de Stadt Gallant 53 and they said he been iced up there for 2 winters already at that time !

It's the herd instinct, most new arrivals will head for the herd. It is the problem with anchoring away from everyone eventually boats will join you.
