I am after some help with ordering a new gypsy for my windlass. This is the model of the windlass and the chain I have is 8MM GALVANISED CHAIN ISO 1461 CALIBRATED DIN 766 GRADE 4.

I have emailed a few companies including the UK dealer for Quick but haven’t had a reply. Even google hasn’t helped me so hoping there is someone out there who has the knowledge.

Many thanks. Dan

I've a Quick windlass (bought last year to replace another) but I'm afraid I don't recognise any of the codes on there.

Maybe you could have a look at the SVB website (who sell a wide range of Quick Windlasses) to see if you can actually recognise yours. https://www.svb24.com/?t=find&action=results&query=quick windlass

I pressume you just want to buy the gypsy or drum and I guess you're asking if anyone knows the part number.

I do still have the whole gypsy and drive shaft mechanism for my previous Quick windlass but it is for 10mm chain so probably not much help.

Your photo shows an RMI50 gearbox which was made by Quick. This gearbox was used on some Lewmar windlasses, so yours isn't necessarily a Quick windlass. You need to identify the actual make/model of the windlass in order to buy the right gypsy.

Thanks for your help so far, will contact SVB tomorrow. I hadn’t found them before, the guys I found were UK based.

Above is a picture of the windlass if it’s any help. This is before I increased the chain size to 8mm, wrongly believing it already had an 8mm gypsy.

If you already have an 8mm chain, that gypsy would be 10mm. If you are not sure what size chain you have try this table:

Once you have confirmed the size you can order the gypsy from Quick, possibly asking them for the diameter of the thing to see whether or not it would fit in the space. It is most unlikely that the shaft will be different in diameter and/or taper and DIN766 / ISO4565 do not vary in most sizes of that range. Safest thing to do is, of course, to try out half a metre of the chain that you have on the gypsy that will be offered.

Contact Quick direct in Italy. They have spreadsheets of their gypsys and which windlass those gypsys fit. If you tell them your windlass model number, not the gear box number - though the gear box might be unique to the windlass, and chain size they should be able to reply by return with the appropriate gypsy. They might even have the gypsy spreadsheet hidden on their website.

Just to close the thread, quick took ten days to reply to my email. In this time, Bainbridge managed to identify the correct part and Spares Marine in Torquay obtained it for me in 3 days. The gypsy is now sat in my kitchen waiting to be fitted.
