Questions on how to hook up a new chart plotter

Am fitting a new Lowrance 5150c, am trying to connect in to my B&G system, from what I can see the autopilot needs a GPS feed and the radio needs one, now the Lowrance has a GPS input to it and an NMEA in and out, question can I take the NMEA ouput and feed it in parallel to both the pilot and the radio, ie choc box connectors to feed both?

Hi Stu,
Normally NMEA will drive at least 2 outputs. Try it, you can't cause any damage.

Simple answer - Yes.

You should find you can do 4 or more listeners of the nmea output.

I understand that you can fit several devices wanting an NMEA feed to one OUT port of a chartplotter. But can you fit more than one device giving an NMEA output to the same IN port

For example if you are trying to connect a chartplotter to your instruments (which output heading, depth etc) and an AIS engine to a plotter, can these both be connected to the same port?

[/ QUOTE ]No, the 2 types of data are incompatible. The plotter manual should have details of how to wire multiple inputs. In some cases, it's necessary to use a multiplexer to combine data inputs.
