5-6 metres is unacceptable for a home network. With a simple USB device, and standard pcmia card in laptop, get better than that even in old cottage with feet thick walls. Your aerial is not properly positioned (try changing it, even inches can matter) or try making one of the 'pringle box' type antennae. A search here or on google will show up this option.
Wifi networks work well, but you have to be prepared to jiggle and move the laptop or aerial on router etc a little bit if reception is bad.
