I have a 2007 Formula 400 SS with Volvo Penta diesels. I boat 100% in freshwater. I don't have an option to put a lift in my marina. So, I really have no choice but to bottom paint the boat as it sits in the water for 6-7 months.

FYI -- My boat does 40-41 knots (46-47 mph) regardless of weight or number of people on-board. Question is this!

I am debating whether to put a hard racing type bottom paint on like VC-17M Extra versus something more traditional like SeaHawk Cukote. Will I see much, if any, degradation of speed? People claim they didn't see a loss of top end with the VC-17M. Is it worth the extra price versus Cukote?

My bottom coat guy is recommending the Cukote as it holds up much better in our waters. Besides, he says he can apply the coats thin. The big advantage is the Cukote requires touch up once every 4-5 seasons versus once every year or two with the VC-17M.

Thanks for your help gents.

The vast majority of members here are from the other side of the pond and boat in salt water. I once made the mistake on the Formula forum of saying what I use as AF and you could have heard a pin drop in the room the silence was so profound. You guys march to a different drum so I dont think you will find your answer here. It is a question that does come up on the American forums and you may want to take advice from your peers on the Formula forum for what the local users find best in their own waters
