Hi,

I’m seeking a Jeanneau 805 Leader which came with a variety of engines. I wish to get a diesel which has 2 options: Volvo Penta KAD43 (old turbo charged V6 diesel) or a more modern and economical Volvo Penta D4. (In-line 4 cylinder). The D4 version is rarer and I wondered if anyone knows the years that it was produced with this engine on this boat?

If anyone is selling one, please let me know. Or a Doral 250. Thanks!
Mark

I'd go for the kad43 with DPE all day. Great boat which I'd rate over the Doral.

The canopy is a bit of a nuisance.

Make sure ot has trim tabs, lots out there without. Its not a tippy boat but still...

Thank you, that’s really helpful. Yes I’ve heard this about the canopies, do you know what the issue is there? Are they just fiddly to put up and take down, or do they leak? Keen to know what the issues are with the canopies that I’ve seen people mention. Thank you!

The kad43 is probably the best of the bunch of the kad engines if not a contender for the best of all VP engines . It's a straight six not a V6. Less complicated than a D4 . Lack of complexity is a good thing.
Yes the D4 uses about the same or possibly less fuel for more power but fuel economy is only one of may boat running costs and not necessarily a major factor in this comparison. Not saying I would walk away from a D4 but the kad is possibly the more robust design. All in my non expert opinion.

£1000 mentioned by Mr B in his video to service a single engine sounds expensive to me but I guess that includes all filters , oil and coolant , belts and raw water impeller plus main dealer premium.

I did pay for main dealer service when I had a single engined boat . However the last time I paid for a engine service was probably 2015 after I had changed to a twin engined boat. . As said the cost was doubled . Since then have done service work on a DIY basis and found everything so far to be relatively easy . Being usually stuck behind a computer in my day job I find the working on the boat to be quite enjoyable and satisfying .
One advantage of DIY being you don't have to do everything in one hit . eg. coolant I did in early summer , engine oil and filter I did in December. Impellers will be inspected soon and replaced only if found to be required. I buy filters a few at at time so its often the case I have them already in stock.
By spreading the buying of service items, buying when a good prices are on offer , and spreading the work the engine service costs are never a big expense at any one time.

A man after my own heart, I’m also desk bound to a laptop most of the time and equally enjoy tinkering. I also like to know it’s done properly (best possible oil) etc as opposed to not really knowing what was out in. (Call me cynical!) I agree that’s the basic stuff is probably worth doing yourself.

My previous boat was a 2005 leader 805 with a VP D4. I had it for 7 years and really enjoyed it. Biggest issues I had were leaking steering arms on the outdrives - at least one per season. The other issue I had was loss of power on 2 separate occasions and both due to a faulty oil pressure sensor.

We bought our 805 last year it has a KAD43, it doesn't smoke or use oil and pulls like a train, we had ours fully serviced by a local company in Oct £550 all using genuine VP parts inc all belts etc. They are a lovely stable boat, we don't have trim tabs and honestly I can't say I've missed them, she gets up onto plane quickly and having a broad beam means she isn't tippy. The canopy is fine just start from the front when putting it up and work backwards.

It's an easy boat for one person to manage, with a great social cockpit, good luck with your search you won't regret it.

I don’t know why boat electrics are so unreliable! Maybe something to do with the marine environment, but if they can make aircraft that fly for years on end without crashing (mostly), I’m sure they could find a way to make an oil sensor that’s reliable. On an old boat I had, we had an electrical problem where the power dropped and we just couldn’t figure out what it was, a nightmare to sort; in the end it turned out to be the battery isolator switch had a dodgy connection!

Good to know! Thanks! Brexit hasn’t helped matters as I can only buy within the UK. Otherwise you now have to pay VAT and duty. I’ll keep my eyes peeled! Can I ask one thing... the place I’m looking to keep it has no shore power, do you think that’s an issue for not having tube heaters in winter? (with damp and mould)

Thanks, yes I’ve seen this boat and spoken to the broker, unfortunately buying from Ireland into the UK is dead as I would need to pay 20% VAT. (possibly duty also) The joys of Brexit!!!

Why is it dead? That boat, (if you could get a deal at say £28000 landed in UK with VAT paid will be mid 30k - I’ve seen them for £40-50k....?

If it’s owned by a UK resident he can also ship it back here VAT free for 12 months. If owned by a Southern Irish owner then he can’t.

This one also good value JEANNEAU LEADER 805 Used Boat for Sale 2002 | TheYachtMarket

Again, gotta pay the VAT.

but still cheaper than to buy one and ship it than pay this - although this one is MUCH newer to be fair.

Yes, good point. Begs the question why an earth we over-pay for boats in the UK! (Paying VAT twice seems ridiculous) I’ll have to explore if there is duty to pay and what shipping costs might be from say South France... any ideas?

Some of the European boats look very good value even with the VAT and shipping - however long way to go for a viewing.
Yes, there’s the risk factor. I guess a survey would help if you could find a trusted and English speaking surveyor. Some boats are dry docked on sticks and I wonder how they could test the engine/drivetrain etc. I doubt they would initiate a sea test from this state of storage.
