Hello there.

My brother and I have just bought a 12ft speedboat style boat and it has no engine.

I was wondering what we would need to mount it onto the back of the boat.

For example do we need an engine with a special fitting for the steering and also how does the 'tilt' mechanism work. We haven't got a clue where to start !!!??

Does anyone know where I could get some info plz. I've tried googling it but not really had any joy.

I've added a link to a pic of the boat below. Many thanks. Robin.

Hi

All outboard motors have a bracket that will fit to the transom (the bit at the back). The bolt holes are where the previous motor was attached and you can see that the steering cables are still present. You'll need a throttle control too. I'm not sure what power will suit the boat, probably not more than 40hp but many hereabouts will have a better idea.

Hi. Thanks a lot for your reply it's much appreciated.

I've seen on boats that the engine lifts up out of the water a bit. Do I need to have this tilt thingy on mine too or is it an optional thing please.

Cheers. Rob.

Broom has moved on a bit...!

All outboards that would suit have the tilt thingy that you mention. You do need it. It's useful so that eg the propeller can be lifted out of the water when you approach shallow water eg a beach, or when launching or recovering the boat on a trailer.

Welcome to the forum, can I suggest that as you are a bit new to boating that you get some tuition before venturing onto the water. It will increase your enjoyment as well as safety, good luck with your first boat!

Ok thanks very much that's great.

I don't suppose you could let me know of one or two examples of outboards that would suit would you please.

Cheers. Rob.

You should find a plate on the boat which states the maximum HP and shaft length. If not then contact Broom in Norfolk who still have the records of their older boats and can advise you.

Be aware that a decent working outboard of the size needed to get the boat on the plane will cost you many times more than you paid for the boat.

Echo the advice to get some tuition and safety gear before you even think about using it. They are not toys and you need to know how it all works and how to handle it before you become a statistic!
