There are lots of lines on a yacht. All different colours. Each coloured line performs a different task.

My question is - are these colours standard and/or universal? As in, when you get on a sail boat, you automatically know what each line does?

Hello my darling, nice to see you in this part of the world.

One of those lines is called the Bootstrap. I know how much you love your shoes so make of it as you will.

Pauline,

As a mature woman( sorry that should hae been frased, experienced) you must know , that it depends on what you pull, for the result to be "OK".

Serious answer.

No They don't always mean the same thing - My 2 1st Reefing lines are Blue, someone elses could be pink.

BUT, most people label their lines just to ruin peppermints fun ;)

Never could understand the purpose of coloured rope. They all look the same in the dark.
There aren't enough colours for a gaff rigged schooner with topsails on main and jib as well as a Fisherman's between the masts, watersail and one or two others. You just have to get used to which pin on the rail each line is made fast.

... but the vast, vast majority of people never use their boat after dark. In fact a significant number dont use their boat.

On that basis the coloured lines do at worst look decorative, at best they mask the algae stains.

Hello Darling,

Yes generally, you can see where they go, that gives you a good idea, colour coding is handy, only convention I have ever come across is spinnaker guys both the same but spinnaker sheets usually red and green but its not hard and fast (ooer) rule.

You must try sailing, it great, even though I own a stink potter.

don\'t sail a boat with white ropes...

skipper will shout things like 'heave on the spinnaker boom topping lift' and act all superior when you pull the genoa halliard instead.

us friendly types with multi-coloured ropes just say 'pull the red one'.

simple, see?

Well what the bloody hell do you think. Where would be the fun if it was all the same.

Is it true all the lines on a stinkie are white and come from Columbia?

Had a mate nicknamed "1 Iron Mike" for obvious golfing reasons. Then he went and got himself married and became known as "Steam Iron Mike" for obvious matrimonial reasons. The poor bastard - we miss him at the golf club. And to make matters worse for him, his wife has gone and grown herself an enourmous putting green.

I wondered that, Pauline, but recently when the rigger came down to my boat to quote for the running rigging she asked did I want them done in the right colours. Apparently there is a standard form and it's done on the basis that anyone who comes onto your yacht should just pick up a line at the foot of the mast and know what it does. As long as one of us does.

Just the job for sailing at night and keeping boars away. Not so good at repelling bores allegedly.
