How do the online courses assess these? Do you scan the chart?

Am a RYA CI and the idea of a quantative assessment value for a fix seems nonsensical.
A fix off a headland, lighthouse and mountaintop at night ain't gonna put you within 100yds of anywhere. Likewise, 100 yrds error from crossed transits is poor performance. That the instructor fails to consider this is cause for alarm.

I think it was first mate having her proverbials in a twist. She's like that.

Thats why students learn how to do it in the theory course and then take and plot real ones during a practical course. Exactly so an Insructor can talk about possible errors.

First step is to measure the lat and long of your fix. You enter that and its marked for accuracy within a course designed limit.

You get several tries. If at that stage a student isnt getting it, they can phone or email the Instructor of the day for a chat. SKYPE is very good at this. They can also take a piccie of the chart and send it through. One way or another, the support is there!
