If anyone has a length of early model Rotostay foil handy I would be very grateful to know the diameter of the groove into which the headsail luff rope slides;
It probably depends on the model of Rotostay, but this old instruction leaflet says 7mm max for the bolt rope.

Thanks for that.
The reason I want to know is because I am going to fit a genoa with Reef Rite Kiwi slides (slugs) and I need to know the maximum diameter of slide the foil will accomodate since Reef Rite say to use the largest diameter Kiwi slide that will fit into the groove.
'As I said, it probably depends on the model of Rotostay. Can't you check the groove size on yours by pushing different diameter bits of rope into it?
'
Unfortunately, my boat is in Brittany at present and I am in London.
However, I do have a short length of scrap Rotostay foil here which which has a groove diameter of 3/8" (9.5mm) but I cannot be absolutely sure it is the same as I have fitted to my boat.
I also have my genoa here and the diameter of its luff rope is 8mm.
Kiwi slides/slugs are available in 8mm and 9mm diameters.
The manufacturer recommends using the largest size slug that will fit into the foil.
That would be 9mm, provided the groove diameter on the foil fitted to my boat is the same as that of the scrap piece I have.
That is what I am unsure of and why I asked if anyone else had access to a foil they could measure.
These slides are coming from New Zealand and I expect the postage will be high so I don't want to order the wrong size and have to send them back.
Thanks for your advice, PVB. Helpful as always.OK, that's a bit clearer. I'd order 8mm, as you know they'll fit, just the same as your genoa. They're unlikely to pull out.
Helpful as always.
Myabe they would.Thank you. Lots of fervent government-haters would disagree with you!
I have a Rotostay E06 - I used 9 mm slides in the foil when I adapted a hank - on jib. Made by Bainbridge, though
No picture but it's still helpful.I have a Rotostay FS-E, here's a picture of the bolt rope groove swallowing a 10mm drill [it won't swallow a 10.5], and the slot gap is 3.5mm
Look again!No picture but it's still helpful.
Look again!
Yes - it was a nice sail and lived out it's life hoisted on my Rotostay. There was no UV strip so I tended to take it down when leaving the boat - the slides made that easy. The slides were supposed to be for a mainsail, but I fitted them instead of the piston hanks using a few turns of light polyester line.Interesting.
Was that a successful modification?
8mm is fine for older Rotostay...So long as it’s not the rare twin groove version .
Have seen the plastimo slugs used as well(6mm ) .
Kiwi slides are better as they allow for a tighter furl to the foil,

Hi that sounds a bit steep .Do you keep a stock of Kiwi slides?
The reason I ask is that I have had a quote from the manufacturers in New Zealand and although the slides are not expensive in New Zealand, the shipping and bank charges are disproportionate when buying a small quantity and having them sent to the UK;
13 Kiwi slides NZ$ 65.78
Bank charges 30.00
Post/packing/insurance 81.39
Total NZ$ 177.17 which is about £88 sterling
On top of that my bank will charge £25 for the money transfer!
It seems a lot to pay for a piece of nylon with a bit of webbing bonded in.

Thanks. I appreciate that.Hi that sounds a bit steep .
We can order them from Bainbridge I think. Don’t believe they were that expensive.Will check in the morning for you .
