Query re: \'Hanging anodes\'

If I wanted to fit extra anodes whilst the boat (old grp motor boat with twin engines on shafts) is in the marina, could I attach a hanging anode (each side) to the bolts of the permanent anodes?

Thanks for any advice.

Re: Query re: \'Hanging anodes\'

What are you trying to protect? External anodes can only protect other external gear, so if you have steel rudder or other fixed parts, or if your stern gear is not being protected, then it could be worthwhile hanging anodes over the side. This is not the most effective method of protection but could be a useful temporary measure until you fit something better.

An external anode will do nothing for your engines, or any other components of them inside the boat. Seacocks and skin fittings are best left unconnected to anodes.

Thanks for the quick reply, Vyv.

Yes, it's the externals I'm concerned about, as I haven't been able to check the external anodes for a while.

And yes, again, only a temporary measure till I get the time to get the boat ashore.

Re: Query re: \'Hanging anodes\'

You need to connect the other end of the wire to the component to be protected, inside the boat. For a prop shaft this is quite easy (but don't forget to disconnect before starting up!) For rudders etc it may take some ingenuity. Use fairly heavy wire as the voltage is low and the route may be quite long.

Re: Query re: \'Hanging anodes\'

That's why I was wondering whether attaching the wire from a hanging anode to the bolts on the permanent anodes would do (as the permanent anodes are already bonded to the bits being protected).

Many thanks again...I greatly appreciate your time.

Did this this year. Previously the st/bd bow anode wore down quite quickly, could only think it was because the st/bd bow was near steel piling. On lift out this year there wasnt as much wear.I jubillee clipped an old anode with a length of copper wire to the stainless steel handrail(steel boat) and dropped in the water alongside existing anode.

Re: Query re: \'Hanging anodes\'

Hey!! Would that work for a boat coming inland. Has new salt anodes on exterior gear, GRP twin shafts, but it's coming inland to the Trent for a couple of years, instead of paying to extracate the vessel from the water just for this, is it possible to attach and dangle the fresh water anodes from the side attached to the same points as the salty ones it currently has attached?

Re: Query re: \'Hanging anodes\'

Cool, so using a household electrician's tester, what should the voltage read? Anything at all is good enough?

Re: Query re: \'Hanging anodes\'

I'll post again when the time comes! But will try this way first and seek more advice. thanks
