I have a 25 foot MOB, it will do about 6k without the aid of tides. Next spring I would like to go from Queenbourgh to Teddington and spend a few days on the river up there.is it possible to do on one tide leaving maybe an hour before the tide turns?
Any advise for some one doing it for the first time?

yes it is possible, know a couple of boats which do it that way
main problem is debris further up river. dont forget to radio london vts before thames barrier, someone else will probery fill you in on other things to look out for hope this helps

Martin, We do this trip on a fairly regular basis, but only to Putney. You need to leave Queenborough on the tail end of the tide, gets you out to the estuary with the tide. When tide turns, it will be with you all the way up to Teddington. The one tide should be
sufficent time. If you mess it up, you can almost certainly wait at Putney, club moorings,
for 24 hrs. I am sure you wont!

you might like to consider a break at South Dock. I suggest there rather than St Kats as South Dock will have the gates open as you approach whereas St Kats can have you (if you are unlucky) stooging around outside for an hour or two.

If you are planning to do it all in one then you need to consider your approach to and arrival at Teddington with regard to depth of water. A guide might be aim for
passage thought the Richmond barrier as it opens about 2 hours before HW Richmond and plan you departure Q'boro with that in mind. Depends how much water you need.

I would suggest a plan to arrive at the top of the tide at Richmond or within an hour after bearing in mind you would be punching the tide any time after and it does rip a bit the later you leave it.

This I hope should help. On 15th Sept we stayed overnight on the barge at Queenborough and set off at (all times local) 09.28 on the 16th. Low tide at Southend was 09.50 and we were at Midswatch buoy at 10.03. conditions were a little choppy as we had a westerly wind but we made aprox 8 to 9 knots most of the way and passed through the barrier at 15.14. High tide at London bridge was 17.22 and we passed at 15.00. Therefore high tide at Richmond was 18.22 and this means the gates are down aprox two hours before. We passed Richmond at 16.54 with arrival at Teddington at 17.23. If anything we might have left Queenborough half an hour early but all in all it was a great trip. We had no problems with debris and as long as you keep a good look out for the trip boats then all should be well. Good luck and if you need any further timings please let me know. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Have done the trip several times always using the tide.Me I would go as early as poss.Try to go across the Swatchway and into the Thames before LW.Maybe even punch the last of the ebb,you want to take full advantage of the flood all the way up.With six knots and a nice tidal flow you could be doing 8/9 knots towards the end.Keep an eye of the wind in Sea Reach if in any doubt go another day.
A wonderful experience going up under Tower Bridge if a bit bumpy from trip boats. You could break the trip at ST Kats etc but if you want to keep going about six hours should see you from Queenborough to Teddington.

The best way to view the bridge.

Thanks for all the information. I will give it a go early spring ,it will give me something to look forward to over the winter.
