Queen to visit Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, will visit the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) on Thursday June 11. The Academy provides access to the best small boat sailing waters in the world and is the first venue to be completed for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Royal Party will meet Olympic hopefuls in training and local people who are learning to sail as part of WPNSA's programme with the Chesil Trust. The trust offers subsidised RYA courses many of which are run in conjunction with SailLaser for children and young people who are disabled or at a social disadvantage.

The scheme is just one of the WPNSA's and SailLaser's many community involvement initiatives including the opportunity for individuals to 'Sail for £5',or for family groups of up to four people to have a sail for £10 and which will be available to the public again on July 11th as part of the 'Spirit of the Sea' Festival.

John Tweed, Chief Executive of the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, said: 'It is an enormous honour for the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy that both Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will be coming to see the completed Olympic Delivery Authority works and the Chesil Trust 'Sail for a Fiver' programme. On the 11th June there will be a number of young people learning to sail and we hope to give a real flavour of how important this facility is for the whole community, not just the competitive sailors.'

Having been there once by road I bet the queen goes by helicopter.

The roads are diabolical and even after the improvements that are ongoing access will still be a nightmare.

Yes because the hard working people of Weymouth and Portland have seen all their taxes going to make an excellent transport system in East Anglia. Yes the transport system is diabolical but it is the same for most seaside resorts on the South Coast of England.

Which excellent transport system in East Anglia do you have in mind?? Perhaps the A12, which is statistically rated as one of the worst roads in Great Britain. Part prewar dual carriageway, part single track through villages with multiple dangerous junctions, even on the dual carriageway sections.

We have one M-way, the M11, which hardly enters East Anglia and certainly goes nowhere near the coast.

Perhaps geography is not your best subject?

Glad about your comments! what people seem to forget is that once you are off the M25, There ain't no roads at all! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif and if you want to come East you might as well take a Donkey cart! its just as Quick!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

That is correct, however the A120 has long sections that are single track, and you may only go at the speed of the slowest. The A14 I had forgotten, no excuse /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif, however it is very busy with heavy lorry traffic, as it goes to Felixstowe docks. It seems to be subject to a high accident rate often involving lorries, possibly non UK drivers the cause? The majority of the sailing venues on the East Coast have very poor road communications.

When someone accused Churchill of not knowing how to use a bus, he got on the first that came and said "take me to Claridges". Far be it from me to suggest that HM has such a fragile understanding of normal life but, if the royals and our ministers had to live with the everyday problems like poor public transport, we might se some improvements. Or are these problems inherent to all times and all places?

Sorry but I take issue with that ... I can think of quite a few locations far better than there ! Typical Media rubbish.
