You must have seen these jackets, certainly all around the Solent - made from authentic sails, sometimes high performance ones, original stitching, sail numbers, rust stains etc. - obviously come from sailing boats:

Why are they invariably worn by people with motor boats?

I've got my old mainsail still in the garage, must be a 1000 quids worth of jackets in it, but respecting the forum rules, £400 anyone?:D Or should I post on the mobo forum?

Why would ANYONE want to buy them?

Why on earth would you want to own a sailing boat - often cold, wet, cramped and mostly expensive.

And, for all this, all you get is the pleasure of sailing?

I have a Quba jacket (and a sailing boat) and I love it largely because it is just a nice thing to own and reminds me of the boat whenever I wear it.

Rob

PS - I would dearly love one of the RKJ ones but that is a step too far until the lottery win!

It's an old tradition, brought back at a silly price.

In the olden days, long before GPS and iPods, MPX and Croakies, real hard sailing men used to make rough foul-weather smocks from old sail canvas, usually remnants from old, weak and torn sails that was no good for sail repairs.

...but usually Free On Board. :)

Talking of sailing clothing of the past....those WW2 Duffel Coats....not warm were they ?

I tried wearing one on the bridge when in the MN in the Baltic just out of curiosity...if the wind came from any direction except from astern...Brrrr!...I soon gave it up..:D

I ve got a couple of their items for which i find that their price is similar to the rest of the sailing clothes that there are in the market.Point is wait untill the boat show takes place and you get 50% off at least in Greece.Oh i own a sailing boat but i use their jackets also while riding a motor bike so i dont have to pay for the other ''special'' clothing as well.

I think it's a bl00dy disgrace. Here's mine. I checked with Quba but they said it was OK to wear because I used to do a lot of windsurfing when I was a bit younger.

It is an absolute disgrace - just look at those trip hazards ... can't you at least tidy up the power cable?!

I was just curious as to why they seem to be favoured by motor boaters, I suppose you don't need anything particularly waterproof in a boat with a roof. Never know, could start a reverse trend with sailors wearing Sunseeker or Fairline jackets and the like....;).
