Qualifications?

Down the pub last night a friend of mine said "why don't you start a charter business?" I told him that I don't have the qualifications required. Of course he then said, "what would you need?" All I could do was shrug!!! The two drunks then planned a business, me as skipper, him as chef (his trade). Now my hangover is improving I would love to know what I need to get the paperwork and insurance required. I have 10 years experience of cruising and racing, including thousands of miles day and night.

Comercially endorsed yachtmaster.

So yachtmaster + sea survival + first aid (part of yachtmaster but needs to be valid) + medical.

Commercially endorsed second income or trust fund would be good, cos there aint many charter companies making a good income out there.

Unless you know different of course.

Well we do both have houses we can rent out! I am planning to take some time off and go sailing on the rental from my house. The charter thing was just a drunken joke but you never know. Any idea how much a commercially endosed yachtmaster would cost?

Minimum costs, assuming you don't go mad with a zero-to-hero course and can meet the mileage requirements:

YM shorebased evening classes 90
2 weekends with sailing school 400
Exam fee 150
SRC VHF course 100
Survival course 200
1st aid course 50
Doctor's cert. 30
SRC VHF course 100

These are guestimates. If you're serious, you can soon find out actual figures.

Thanks very much, Do you have any idea of the leval of milage needed and does it need to be skippering. Also how do you prove milage?

It's quite a complicated formula. 2500 miles logged, 5 passages of at least 60 miles, some as skipper, plus a few night hours. A new requirement is that it must have been in the last 10 years. Look on the RYA website for more info. You need to get the logbook signed by the skipper of the boat (that can be yourself). Not more than 50% to be in non-tidal waters (Baltic, Med etc.)

BTW there is no strict requirement to have done the shorebased course. If you don't, the examiner will test you on navigation, met, colregs etc.
