Q genny start battery connection to service batteries

This looks like it may be your user manual?

Says it must be connected to a 70ah battery and must match it exactly.

could welll be, will check in detail at the boat tomorrow, thanks!

however this all lot implies that the system recharges the battery as is, no intervention needed.
However, If (and I've tested it by accident!) you start the genny up and you disconnect one of the battery poles later on while it's running, genny dies, simple as that.

So either mine is slightly different, or there's something wrong in the wiring/internal connections or whatever.
Since I have an AGM100Ah battery and it needs a 70Ah (wonder why, just cranking a 2cyl yanmar ffs!) I may as well get a decent leave and forget charger and get on with life.
IF otherwise it's something simple and I can skip spending the 80euro, I'm keen to know :D

cheers

If it is yours and looking at the service manual on page 7, it says there is a "battery charger fuse". With any luck it's just that blown...

Kevin,

replied while you're posting.

Yep, looks like mine is the 7/8 whatever of them (got confused initially as the smaller ones don't look at all like mine on the engine side) however this box they show on p7 which I've not noticed is in the most inaccessible place against the e/r-lazarette bulkhead and I have to invent ways of accessing it.
Even removing the screws of the cover is going to be tough. I'll get the son to come and help on that I think, noway I can do it alone :(
However if it is just the fuse, and I do manage to access and replace it, I'll be very happy!

Wonder if it will be easier to undo the genny mounts and slide it fwd to gain access. Will check.

cheers

There is a few ways to skin this cat
null_zpsa5f394bc.jpg

Here there is a dedicated bat charger for the Geny bat only - a simple car -60Ah - batt - it's yellow box top right (obscured behind the pole )
And a seperate cross over switch -middle left ish in Gray - so if for what ever reason the gen bat does not work ,there is a back up, taking 12 v from either the house or engine batts .

Also there is a duplicate set of Geny control panal in the E room . So you can start / stop from E room ( handy @ service ) or saloon console with out entering the E room
Mario Amarti - new his onions :) or listened to owners

here's the E room Geny controls -you can,t see it on pic one it's behind the left SS pole .

So Vas how about fitting a x over switch ? As well as as a dedicated charger ?

Charger yellow
X over switch
And dedicated bat in the middle

Vas I've lost track of what you found out about that loose 12V connection,
but it seems to me, well worth the effort of sorting out completely how that the genny was functioning originally, or meant to function, regarding the 12V charging.
from all info you gave combined with the info from KevB it seems that there was some sort of charging for the 12V batt from the geny engine or generator.

as I understood, the boat is not much on a mooring with 230V connection.
Only when she has 230V most of the time, it makes sense to place a good 12V charger, for topping up that battery.
if so, I'll help you with that, I'll get you a Victron, just let me know!

Bart,

haven't had the time to go to the boat (talking about 400metres from either home or office!!!) to check.
If I'm lucky I'll get a chance over the w/e and I'll report.
I'd also prefer to sort it without buying new kit for the same reason.
Further the victron you're probably thinking is on the 200euro price range which is a bit too much for a genny battery (all smaller victrons I've checked feature at least a mode button which makes them inappropriate)

anyway, thanks for the offer I'll report over the w/e.

cheers

Not pushing for the Mastervolt being better or the one to have at all but whilst mine has a mode button, the unit comes on in the mode it was left in last time it was turned off, or it certainly appears to although I've only used it in 12V Wet mode (unless by chance that is the default). Might be worth checking if the Victron, if that's what you end up going for, doesn't do the same. I can understand them re-starting in the same mode as left in or the average consumer would almost certainly get it wrong if having to set the mode every time.
