Ok - UK to France- country within EU. However if going on to the Channel Islands which is outside the EU do you have to display a Q flag? Reeds says yes, but I wondered whether the convention was different?

Many thanks in advance

When you arrive in the Channel Iskands from either UK or France you need to fly the Q flag until you fill in the customs form which will either be given to you or can get from the Harbourmasters office. When travelling between Guernsey and Alderney you do not need to rehoist it but you will if to move on to Jersey. On arriving back to the UK you should hoist it and phone Customs. If you travel from the CI's to France I should think you need to fly the Q but I'd think you'd grow a beard waiting for the French Customs to come. The above is the official line but whether it's followed by most people is another matter.

Bill's right, I never bother, but that’s me! The other week I went straight into Havelet bay and anchored, so didn’t fill out a customs form.
I wonder if any CI boats fly a Q when visiting France for the weekend.

Q flag should be flown on arrival at the CIs and on your return to the UK or arrival in France -- but few people bother!
