Anyone else had difficulty getting an anchor to hold in the Pyefleet? It's several times its happened now [when its a bit blowy] with a Parker 275, plenty of 8mm chain out, and a 10kg Delta anchor - are any other anchors thought to be more reliable there? The Delta works fine elsewhere.

I've had problems in the past with pipe weed. If you hit a patch of that it stops the anchor getting to the mud. Once it does get a grip it's good holding.

Thanks for the replies. When I had a boat with a [genuine] Bruce, it worked fine every time. I could have tried the Guardian G7 kedge I have now, but did not have the patience for the faffing about [singlehanded].

The anchor came up with mud on it, and nothing else, and I had dragged it at least 20-30m over an hour or so with it holding quite a lot of load - just not enough.

On other occasions I have had to use a lot of patience to dislodge the Guardian, though I generally only use it as a lunch hook.

We have anchored many dozens of times(may even be hundreds) in Pyefleet, recently with a Bugel anchor, and on our previous boat with a CQR. Once, out of those dozens of times, with the CQR, we dragged maybe 30 m in a strong blow from the south, moving across the creek. Every other time the anchor has set straight away and held beautifully. We usually sail in and anchor under sail, so rarely power backwards to set the anchor. We have probably become a bit too complacent! The seabed is thick soft mud, so maybe it helps to allow the anchor to sink in before powering back to set it.
It can be hard to break out the anchor, and it always comes up with a lot of mud (no weed) on it.
