Pwllhelli Marina problems again

Just to clarify it is the marina pontoons that are £380 per meter pa and this is not half empty.
It is the outer harbor that has tthe problem and that is mosty the drying trot moorings. These are a lot cheaper pa.
There is supposed the be a new financial structure started last autumn so we will have to wait and see what happens.

I an very happy writing thas on my pile mooring there now. Just waiting for the rain to decrease a little.

I wondered when I saw the quote that the pontoons were half empty. We have not been able to visit during the winter but certainly at the end of last season there were not many empty berths in our area, right down at the far end, and there did not seem to be many empty spaces further up.

The pontoons are certainly not half empty and are starting to fill as more boats are lifted in.
Certainly not full but the new system of one price per meter, not pricing for the finger length should give more space for the smaller boats.

Around the Pwllheli area this week but as a landlubber. Visited Plas Heli yesterday. Certainly a number of vacant berths but probably as one would expect at this time of year. Disappointing, though, to see so little activity on the water in a holiday period: in 4 hours or so, I think I only saw one boat being moved (and one remarkably quiet j** s**.)

The sailing centre at Plas Heli looks like a good facility but they took almost an hour to produce 4 coffees which were pretty much finished by the time the sandwiches arrived. No wonder it wasn't busy.

In spite of my being non-Welsh, the locals have all been pleasant and accommodating. There has been no language problem and only appreciation of my using my, literally, one or two words of Welsh.

I'm not sure I would like to be here at the height of summer. I guess the traffic would be pretty grim judging by the number of caravans and houses to let. The problems of getting to and from the boat would probably put me off though the possibilities of sailing to IoM, Eire, and the SW of England might be some compensation.

I found that as well up in North wales. The only people that seem to have a problem with the English are the politicians.

A friend of mine had a lift out at Pwhelli last year. A badly placed strop dislocated the sail drive then when launched again the boat sank. They denied all liability but it got settled eventually.

Visitor berthing for one night for 10m boat...

Pwllheli £25.70
Conwy £30
Peel £22.30
Aberystwyth £30
Troon £29
Milford Haven £27
Stranraer/Kirkcudbright £18

So it's in the normal range for that bit of the world.

Confirms the conclusion that I came to sailing that coast. The real complete and utter rip of is Aberystwyth. Dump of a marina in a dump of a town miles from anywhere.

I've noticed a few comments about the distance between marinas and towns relating to Pwllheli and now Aberystwyth. . The fact that a town has existed for hundreds of years in a certain location doesn't mean that a marina can be put there. Marinas have to be put somewhere that is technically suitable.

The marina at Pwllheli is a reasonably pleasant near mile to walk, I don't see the issue.

I think that "Dump of a marina in a dump of a town miles from anywhere" may have been a comment on the perceived lack of charm and remoteness of Aberystwyth, not its marina. If so, I think it's a little harsh. Aberystwyth ain't Vegas, but it's no worse than most other coastal towns and a fair bit better than many of them. I know a few people at the university there and they seem to like it well enough. The lack of any sort of modern road west of Welshpool is a bit odd, I grant you, but the train service is OK and I see there are moves afoot to reinstate the line to Carmarthen which, if they ever happened, would hugely improve south to mid-Wales travel.

It's situation does have some benefits. A few years ago, maybe now, it was the most crime-free town in UK. The poor access roads deter the baddies from the midlands and north west.

Based on the detective novels I thought the WI ran the organised crime in Aberystwyth.

If any Englishman thinks he gets a rough time from the locals in Pwllheli, it pales into insignificance when they detect a south Walian accent. The Gogs don’t like sharing their space with anyone south of Aberystwyth.

In fairness I don't like sharing it with anyone North of Aberystwyth either.
