Interesting, but accidental, thread developed on jetskis over in the stolen boats forum.

Love 'em or hate 'em, they're here to stay, at least until the fuel runs out. Maybe it's me, but they seem very touchy.

Are they being persecuted? A daft minority bringing the competent users into disrepute (must say I've only seen really bad behaviour once)?

IMHO it is a case of the odd nutter letting the side down.

I have a lot of contact with PWC users through my weekend job.

I have to say that for the most part the guy's and girl's I see at weekends are just having fun and play safe.
We get the odd on or two that let the side down but this is the same for every user group that play on the water.

I see good and bad in every field of water user, fishermen, RIB users, powerboaters, sailors etc.

Only last weekend, not in my area, a RIB user fell out of his boat, no kill cord on and the vessel the speed out of the water and up the crowded beach.
It only just missed those enjoying the beach!!

PWC's are here to stay I think.
They can be fun, they can also be a great tool.
Just ask the police forces that are using them to great success, my county included.

I think we all need to be more tolerent with all water users IMHO

Regards

Inconsiderates spoil it for thye majority. Whether it's ribs, jet-ski's or gin palaces (but not sailing vessels, natuarlly). Whislt I am sure it is only a minority, I do believew that HMs need to be given greater powers, especailly where wildlife or the public are put in danger. So much emphasis is put on individual freedoms and none on responsibilty. I despare of some of the small but fast vessels who consstantly churn up the waters on the Thames between Kew and Syon Park, even when the huge amounts of wild foul are fledging.

All HM can do is tell them to stop.

More needs to be done and it starts with more respect for the HM and the rules he sets dopwn locally.

Should read prosected

IMHO, of course
all for having fun but if the children of uncertain parentage dump water over us at anchorage then they can go and rot.

The rest of us, at anchor in a 6mph limit zone, may have felt that we were the ones being persecuted by the poor dears.

Same as the difference between a porsche and a porcupine, on the porcupine the pricks are on the outside!

prosected is what we do to the specimens so we can demonstrate anatomy to the students. Have to admit it was a slip of the 'u' but quite Freudian and worked as well!

Very touchy indeed! The worrying thing is that he claims to be an RYA instructor. The RYA instructors I have met have been far more level/cool headed than this character; they need to be.

I thought that his jibe about "cucumber sarnies in the Royal Yacht Squadron" showed what an unrealistic view of the rest of the boating world he had! I think he is defending a stereotype view of jet skiers without finding out what people really think. A pity, but there it is.

Persecuted ?? No they should be restricted to special areas ...

Having been at the receiving end of a group of JS ... I will NOYT use the term PWC, as it covers a broader spectrum .... who side swiped my boat outside Cowes ... near causing my wife to go o/board, swamping cockpit and into main cabin ... I have absloutely NO love for them.

I have been in Estonia on the beach ... yep - you guessed it .... JS roaring up and down making the parents keep their kids close in etc.

In Latvia two beautiful lakes where families go for quiet and BBQ's .... Yep you guessed again .... JS pounding the silence into long forgotten history ....

The problem is not the tool - its the user. Too many of them are Schumachers of the Beach / Harbour area ... and in the case of Cowes ... venturing out to deeper water ....

OK so a few boats have been pulled of banks etc., odd have assisted CG / RNLI etc. - I remember the days of CB Radio and all the claims of CB groups assisting Police / Emerg. services ........... it was repeatedly shown and proven that in fact the CB groups were uninvited and a liability - creating a greater siytuation than already existed ... and I suspect JS's may fall into same category

Sorry too many times I have seen them as a menace ....

Final example : Langstone Hbr Mstr has had a whale of a time in the past trying to catch up with a group that repeatedly full throttled from Ferry Inn through hbr to the Eastern Road bridge past Tudor Club .... and back .... by the time he or anyone else was after them - they had scarpered .... Later returning to do it again ... One time I was lowering my mast on the mooring ... not a time to have a stupid JS cut across the arse of your boat causing it to roll hard .... the laughing could be plainly heard ....

Re: Persecuted ?? No they should be restricted to special areas ...

I must admit that I've never heard of JS drivers helping or towing other craft. I'm not saying it has never happened, just that I've never heard of it, or seen it reported. I doubt if it happens as much as he was trying to make out.

A few weeks ago I towed a broken down speed boat back into Exmouth. With my little 8HP and going against a spring tide it was a long hard slog and, all the time we were being buzzed by JS's. I was very concerned at one point that one of them might decide to go between us. Their high speed, rapid acceleration and maneuverability makes it difficult to know where they will go next. As you say, it's not the craft which are the problem, but what sits on the things.

Jet skis are the toys of the devil. They are an antisocial nuisance that provide limited rewards to the owners and immense inconvenience and actual danger to everyone else. They should be blown out of the water preferably with the little darlings still on top.

It wouldn't be so bad if they were quiet, but they're intrusively noisy. I stay in house, from time to time, which is about 200 metres inland from (but with a view of) a jet-skied bit of sea and you can hear them clearly even when they are quite a way offshore. Big powerboats with hundreds of horses galloping away make less noise.

Is it impossible to fit jetskis with some sort of silencer?

It's like Caterhams. Have you ever heard a quiet one? No, the loud exhaust (they would say Free Flow) and induction noise sound faster than the car really is.
If Jetskis were quieter and didn't fling a huge piddle of cooling water in the air they wouldn't be as seductive to a certain sort of person.
I could never understand why when approaching the slip at Ferry Nab on Windermere (6mph) they had to keep blipping the throttle, which lifted the tub out of the water and then dropped it back in, sending a huge wave ashore rocking all the boats on the jetties, and making launches and recoveries in progress more difficult.
They're just divvies.

Silence the JS\'s .... are you bonkers ??? And towing ...

That's half the fun .... it's like kids on bicycles mimicking motor-cycles by yim yim yimmmmmmmmm while they ride ....

C'mon next you'll be asking to restrict the speed of them next .... like Mopeds to 45km/hr .... or their equiv.

To towing .... I find it hard to believe that a fart-box JS can tow a boat of a sand-bank ... another farty speed-boat maybe or JS .... but a proper boat ???? They are not exactly like tugboats with plenty grunt and low revs ... JS's are all revs and low grunt ....

Hey can anyone copy this thread over to Mr. Jet Ski ?? Sorry Mr. RYA PWC Instructor chappy .... ?? Maybe I'll just have a go m'self !!! Not on a fart-box ... but copy across - see if we can get him to answer ?? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
