I am pretty sure you have to pay VAT on importation from any where outside the EU but the definitive answer would be from the Customs & Excise. Try their web site

Information on VAT payable on imported boats is available from the Customs & Excise web site here

There is also a good summary on the Bodrum Marine Services web site here

I think that the answer is that you have to pay /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif, but you may be able to control how much you pay by choosing your port of entry to the EU /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif.

Do you have any contacts in the Azores for sorting VAT out or is it just a question of pitching up and reporting to customs with the paperwork etc?

If coming from USA/BVI Azores is good place to pay VAT. They're very geared up to it.
