Agree entirely about varnish. That's in fact what I did. 6 coats of gloss, sanding each between coats, first 3 coats thinned 30% then 3 thinned just a little then 2 coats of "rubbed effect" to finish. Result is superb. Have not tried gummed tape but it's a variation that could be tried. The key thing if you stick to "iron on" is don't use more heat than necessary and don't try to "iron it down". Use the iron to warm it, then use a hard wallpaper edging roller. It's excess heat that makes it shrink, so get the iron setting just right by practice before you start. Another tip with filler is to sand a bit of the same veneer and load the sawdust produced into a bit of varnish to produce a "gummy" mix. Fill gaps with this and sand off when hard.
