Putting a thin veneer on my veneer

Agree entirely about varnish. That's in fact what I did. 6 coats of gloss, sanding each between coats, first 3 coats thinned 30% then 3 thinned just a little then 2 coats of "rubbed effect" to finish. Result is superb. Have not tried gummed tape but it's a variation that could be tried. The key thing if you stick to "iron on" is don't use more heat than necessary and don't try to "iron it down". Use the iron to warm it, then use a hard wallpaper edging roller. It's excess heat that makes it shrink, so get the iron setting just right by practice before you start. Another tip with filler is to sand a bit of the same veneer and load the sawdust produced into a bit of varnish to produce a "gummy" mix. Fill gaps with this and sand off when hard.

Hehehehe! I use exactly the same tool a hard, wallpaper edge roller, left over from my house owning days! A hard laminating roller would do as well.
That's a good tip about the filler, I always have a jar full of teak dust, for other jobs, I'll try that next time! Thanks.

James - The water has been getting in through the chainplate, over a long time by the look of it. First job is to sort that out.
There is also signs of water getting in through the genoa tracks but that is easier to sort out.

Tiller Girl, Cliff - I'm reassured by your comments and will try and strip it back first.

Englander, Boatmike - Thanks for the tips, particularly on the varnishing and using gloss initially.

The rest of the woodwork has been varnished with a dark stain as well. The whole effect is pretty grim. However, the solid wood should be easier to restore.

[/ QUOTE ]The varnish stain did not seem to sink in on my woodwork - took most of it off with nitromors and a sharp scraper. The remaining marks came off with a very light sand leaving the original teak veneer "as new"

Patience is what is required - and fixing the leaks first.
