Putting a cock on Volvo MD 2010B sump drain plug

My sump oil drain plug is damn awkward to get a funnel or container underneath, and some always goes in the bilges when I change the engine oil. Has anyone tried putting a tap or cock of some sort on? My thinking is, get a spare sump plug, and drill and tap it for a cock. For peace of mind, all to be loctited and lock-wired off when not changing the oil.
Previous owner of the boat drained the old oil into the bilges at least once, minging ;(
I would be grateful for any dire warnings of problems I might not have foreseen, putting a cock on the sump plug, cheers Jerry
 
I'm not familiar with this engine, but I wonder whether the sump plug has a magnet for collectingferrous particles? If so, then you may be well advised to look at fitting a tee-piece to retain the original plug as well as the tap.

Suggest you use a pump to remove the oil. There is a tube specifically for this on the crankcase.

There is a well-known failure mode in the petroleum industry (and probably every other one that uses piping) known as 'Small Bore fitting failure'. It occurs where a relatively heavy device such as a flow meter, sample cock, gauge, or similar is attached to vibrating pipework via a narrow, short length of pipe. Over time the combination of vibration and the inertia of the device initiates a fatigue crack in the pipe and the device falls off. I can forsee exactly the same scenario in a ball valve or similar attached to a sump drain plug.

I used to be involved with high pressure multi-stage turbine pumps. Each stage was fitted with a small priming cock. None of them ever fell off. The suggestion is fitting the drain cock either to, or in place off the sump plug. There is no pipework involved.

It just seems such a useful thing to do that there must be a good reason why not.
