Its was recommended to me that I should drop my trailered boat into the Thames from the slipways either side of Putney Bridge and "do the London tour".

Looking at "Boatlaunch.co.uk" there certainly seems to be a couple of large slips on the South Bank of the river. However there is little or no mention of parking (car and trailer), where could I park for the day?

Next Saturday, the EA has arranged for free launching from both the sites just upstream of Putney Bridge. If you get there any time after lunch, you will be sure of great reception from the EA's honorary river stewards, who will be wearing blue sweatshirts.

It's traditional on the first Saturday in April for the normal Rule of the Road to be reversed. Any oared craft will automatically give way to you.

Secure and under cover car and trailer parking is best at "The Old Boat House".

Cheeky :D

From the Boatlaunch website:
Facilities: Do not leave your trailer and car on the slip unless you want a parking ticket. Chas Newens Marine is nearby.

I don't know the area but I guess I would give Chas Newens Marine a call and see how helpful they are.

(If you do go on Easter Saturday and bump into the blue sweat shirted young ladies I understand the ones in the pale blue may be more accommodating than those in the dark blue !! :D)

As far as i am aware Chas newins run the slip and may well charge for use of the slipway . Maybe not but the parking there is a nightmare and you will get a parking ticket for no reason atall . The other side of the bridge has been new built so i doubt there is a free slip there and the other side of the river is park land , football clubs and the new kings road so i doubt there is anything there either . Ive done the reach a few times and chas newings was the only place i saw to slip a boat .

It was I admit some years ago, but I found both the ladies in the dark and light blue both Very accommodating :-b

I dont think that the slips are anything to do with Chas, there is also a small slip sideways on to the river right next to Putney bridge. Parking is a major problem in that area, but the Hurlingham Yacht club has space for your trailer in a compound, the car might be accomodated in the yard, the boat can be taken the 150yards, sorry meters to the Hurlingham club pontoon to collect the car driver. As far as I know, these facilities are available to affiliated club members. But I think that if you are a member of a boat club then you should be OK. PM me, and I will get some tel no's for you.

Be very wary when you launch there and don't put the engine into gear until you are confident you are in deep water. It is an excellent launch site but there are a couple of minor banks there. Parking is difficult especially f you have left it late.

i used to launch there reguarly 2 or 3 years ago, the slip is huge and nothing to do with chas newens, they do use part of it and will launch or recover you for a fee if needed, it can be used at any time but you will need a 4 x 4 at low water, i used to go early on a sunday morning to make sure i got a parking space for the car and trailer and parking was free all day. If you have never been on the tidal thames keep a sharp look out for debris in the water, ive seen some big chunks of wood floating around.
Brilliant day out though, best way to see london....

If you google 'parking in putney' you will see there are no restrictions saturday and sunday at the far end of the slip...

I agree with this - I also found that the slip was actually quite horizontal and not quite steep enough for the boat to launch without some serious pushing off the trailer - the tow car was well into the water too.

I think its a LBH&F slipway but as others have said parking is a big issue but the Chas roadshow there has boatyards etc towards Hammersmith that I'm sure could be used at a price.

I think its a LBH&F slipway .

Whoops - you're on the wrong side of the river; LBH&F (Fulham etc) is on t'other - North - side of the river.

Putney is proud (even if it's part of Wandlesworth), and has nothing to do with Furriners from Fulham. Natives have no truck with all that noise from Craven Cottage.

As always the river is a great divide; full of rivalries.

BTW beware of Springs - if you're still allowed to park along the riverside.....

Absolutely correct.

Was clearly out to lunch...... Point is its not a private slip as far as i am aware.

Sorry, it's not my habit to correct innocent mistakes, but these fora get a bit dry at times, so I thought I'd inject a bit of humour - not at your expense you understand!

Having been a longtime resident of Putney (but left years ago), crossing the bridge was a bit like crossing a border.

There used to be some form of slipway on the Fulham side between the road and rail bridges, though I suspect it has probably been filled in long since. ? anyone know different.

I wonder if anyone knows who actually owns the Putney one? It's just off the main road with no private land between it and the embankment. I suspect it belongs to the PLA, but they don't own the river, do they?

There are lots of potential slips around whose availability and ownership are unclear. Fr-instance just upstream of Wandsworth Bridge on the Fulham side, next to where Fina had a fuel depot (probably flats now), and there is still one next to Battersea Old Church. This latter is not a lot of use as there is absolutely nowhere to park anything for miles around.

While I'm wasting time asking useless questions, has anyone tried to launch at low to mid tide from the boathouses along the embankment? Easier to negotiate as it's gravel all the way.

Knowledge is power!

Fulham slip

True blue, the slip you refer to, upstream of Wandsworth bridge, is Broomhouse dock.
This is a public slip but has been locked away from the general public by the local authority,
you have to phone to gain access but the phone is not constantly manned. With regard to using the boathouse slips at low water, check before you reverse down onto the gravel, in places there is a considerable step off the end of the slip.

Thanks for that!
I'm keen to get more traffic on both bits of the river, so every little helps; especially on the Tideway as I've always felt that the PLA treat private craft as an excrescence and are not helpful about services.
