Put oil for petrol engine in diesel boat engine Should I be worried?

Enya,

Are you sure that using semi-synthetic is the correct oil to use. What engine do you have? This is important for advise on the effect.

I would not advise mixing mineral with semi-synthetic.

Check your manual and put in the correct oil if semi-synthetic is specified. The cost of the mineral oil you may have to remove and waste is small.

Suggest you re read the OP

I thought semi synthetic was mineral oil with some synthetic blended in?
I think virtually all oils can be mixed unless you run into castor oil among vintage bike addicts?

The oil is mineral based, not semi synthetic.

You have not said what engine or what oil you have used.

Is the oil the correct viscosity grade ?

Does the spec for the oil you have used mention any service category beginning with a letter 'C', eg CF, CG, CH, or CI ?

If both answers are yes then it will be OK

If it is the correct viscosity grade but only mentions service categories beginning with a letter 'S', eg SJ, SL or SM it is a petrol engine oil. Don't panic but change it sooner rather than later.

If it is not the correct viscosity grade change it.

Sorry I have been out on my boat and incommunicado. The story is this. I went into Sainsburys garage last autumn and bought 5 ltr of mineral oil (not semi-synthetic) for the BZ 482 on my boat. Changed oil before end of season and thought no more. A few weeks ago I needed to top up my car oil which is actually petrol and reading the label noticed it was for petrol engines. They also sell oil for diesel engines as I have since noticed. Having used up all of the oil on my car, it was low, I threw away the container. I therefore cannot answer many of the questions about the spec. The engine seems to function very well with the oil and it still looks nice and clean but should I worry? Should I top up, if I need to with the same make of oil or should I use oil for diesels?

Enya,

The following is an extract from the Beta manual.

Lubrication
Engine oil: Engine oil quality should have the minimum
properties of the American Petroleum Institute “API”
classification CF (CD, or CE). The following table gives grades
of oil viscosity required for various ambient temperature
ranges.
Note: A good quality SAE 15W/40 mineral based multigrade
oil as used in most car diesel engines will meet requirements.
Do not use ‘Turbo Diesel Oil’ or additives, and the use of
synthetic oil is not recommended.

Ambient Temp. Single Grade Multi-Grade
-30°C to 0°C SAE 10W S AE 10W/30
-15°C to +15°C SAE 20W SAE 15W/40
0°C to +30°C SAE 30 SAE 15W/40
25°C and above SAE 30 SAE 15W/40
