purpose of baby stay?

As does tightening the backstay, apparently. I can't get my head round that either.

I've got a question about making a new baby stay mounting plate to go under the deck, but I'll start a new thread I think.
Same effect... bends the mast and flattens the main.

A flat main causes less 'lift' as the relative pressure differences between each side are lower, hence slower.... causes less drag as well, so maintains speed well, but also slower to accellerate the boat, so not so good in a sloppy sea or variable wind, hence why a flat main isn't always the best option for maximum boat speed over a distance... it also causes less rotating force around the centre of rotation, and hence boat tends to heel less.

Depends what you keep constant.
You bend the mast and keep the same tension on the sheelt= flatter main.
Bend the mast and don't pull the sheet back in = more twist...
Everything depends on enverything else....
