Purchasing online advice

All the time people back off and let things go - nothing will change or get sorted.

If not thinking about self - think about other people getting ripped off by something you could have actioned on ...
I've reported him to Action Fraud and the local police. The small claims procedure isn't open to me as I'm getting my money back. I have also notified his bank that his account is being used to funnel fraudulently obtained funds.

Update on the Matthew Goble of Portsmouth situation. I decided to contact him using a different identity to see if he would respond. He did. He's agreed to sell it to the other me. Nice chap. This time he wants cash. I've reported him to the police and action fraud. His bank are going to refund me but I've also initiated a claim through the small claims court as well. He can pay the costs. He is working as a marine surveyor in the Portsmouth area so heads up.

Well done for following up with this. You will probably find it’s a false identity and he knows nothing about boats. We’ve all fallen for something like this at some time. It’s one of life’s lessons. My friends refer to it as paying idiot tax. And it counts for as little as leaving your change in a vending machine to buying the wrong bridge 🥴

Facebook market place and eBay, Gumtree are all widely used by thieves, fraudsters. While there are plenty decent people using them, there is a large minority of crooks. If you use them, only pay by credit card or PayPal. Even Amazon has some crooks, but they police it well, and will refund you quickly. I think it would be fair to say the internet is inhabited by droves of crooks, fake websites etc, so always use a payment system where you are protected, cash and Bank transfers are not one of those. It is also safer to use a credit card for on line purchases for a number of reasons.

Good advice and the reason I came out of this ok. My mission now is to make his life uncomfortable.

There are fraudulent buyers as well as sellers. I've had buyers lie about what they received to PayPal and had their money back without returning the original item. One chap in Spain even returned a lump of concrete and PayPal still gave him his money back so I never accept PayPal if I sell now.

Hi, Ive just fallen for one of his scams. I thought I'd bought a sail from him in facebook market place. He's on there as Gee Walk. I bank transferred to Matthew Goble and haven't received or heard from him since. I found this thread and realised I've been scammed. My own stupid fault I know. I've reported him to my bank who say they are contacting his bank. Also raised it with facebook. Did you get anywhere with the local police or national fraud teams ? I don't know if it is worth contacting them to deal with him ?

Sorry to hear that. I got a small claims judgement against him and made a complaint to the local police. They lost interest when I got my money back, unfortunately. I suppose he knows and relies on that. I have chased him down and he has shut down his social media accounts. Now operating as Gee Walks it appears! Ill follow him up there!!!

Other day - Wife gave me a Facebook sellers link .... pressed me against my advice to buy items there.

Added what she wanted to cart - paid via bank to bank ... but the transfer stopped at my bank ... it said it could take a matter of hours to be verified. OK - so I let it trundle - its not able to cancel during such verification.

Nothing happened - next day - still nothing taken from my account ... but I'm concerned because obviously account details have been given.

The following day - I get call from my Bank (Latvian) - Mr Luther .. we would like to ask about some transactions you have made recently ..... I answer - sure - is this about items from XXXXXX seller ? Yes Mr Luther - we are concerned abot these - but if you wish the transactions to complete - that is your decision. No I do not want them confirmed - please delete and should ay action from that Seller be seen - to be refused. Bank agreed and said - Have a nice day ..

I had during the previous day - gone online to search for the seller outside of Facebook .... page after page of complaints !!

As I said to Wife ... if a seller only allows Bank to Bank .... with No Paypal / No Credit Card etc - then its 'iffy' .... refusing PP and CC means they don't want you to be able to claim your money back !!
