Hi guys this is my first post on here so if this is the wrong place please let me know.

I'm currently on the lookout for a new boat and currently looking at a vessel which was imported into Spain from SE Asia.

My concern at the moment is how can I check if the VAT was paid? The owner says it has but apparently the boat was registered as a German vessel half way through transit so no sure whether this is some sort of loophole they've used

Can anyone help?

If VAT has been paid, demand to see proof. The receipt should be available.

you need to see a VAT receipt showing vat paid somewhere in the EU, a CE document and preferably a builders certificate.

You need to clarify if it was imported by an individual or by a trader.

If it was an individual then he will have received a receipt from the relevant customs office. If a trader then he will have paid on entry and charged VAT to the first private buyer. You also need a Certificate of Conformity for both the boat and engines(s). Even if the boat is a European make, if it was sold in Asia it may not conform to EU regs and therefore cannot be sold legally in the EU. You also of course need to see evidence that the seller has good title.

Be very wary and if necessary seek specialist advice.
