Ok only one place to ask and its here.

Supposing someone you know is having a few days in Henley in a rather posh hotel and wanted to go for long walks by the river but end up in a nice traditional pub.

Where would you go, I am talking walking down the Berks side down to Hambledon (is that right?) is there a boozer not too far from the lock is it the flower pot?

If one was to suggest walking the other side upstream towards Marsh what is there up there past the lock and weir?

We are talking roaring fires and fine ales as well as a decent red and a mean sausage and mash

All suggestions welcome google maps and directions all the better......

Its for a friend.....

Well you did say long walks! I've done it loads of times, and really isn't that far if you like walking.

Could come off the path at Shiplake, and go to the Plowden Arms, but I haven't been in there for years, so no idea what it's like now

I would cross the river at Hambledon lock and follow the path throught the mill and out to the main road. Cross the road and follow the signs through a couple of fields to Hambledon village. I think the pub is called the Stag and Huntsmen. A fab pub in a stunning village.

Past Marsh Lock to Shiplake then near the station is the Baskerville Arms, good beer and friendly bar, restaurant a bit pretentious but not bad.
Bull at Sonning is excelent but they'd need a taxi back.

Posh hotel; the Red Lion maybe? This looks rather pleasant http://www.leander.co.uk/bedrooms.asp
Yes; its the Flowerpot just up from the lock

http://www.rg9.co.uk/sections/pubs/addpubs/pubsplus.php (lists most of the pubs, + GE reference, write up quite old-the fox at Bix is closed)

Yes it was the Flower Pot near Hambledon Lock, no idea if it's still there but I went there a few times in the mid 90's and it was quite good.
Once I delivered a hire boat from Datchet to Abingdon between Xmas and New Year when it was peeing down and the river in flood. It was an old, very slow Bermuda so I only made Hambledon on the first day but the roaring fire in the Flower Pot was a great relief!!

Leander, I think is a members only club.
The Golden Ball at Lower Assendon has changed hands recently and is fantastic. I suggest your freind books if going at the weekend (it is not a river walk)
I think "The Ship" in Shiplake has just reopened and is reportedly good although we haven't been yet (is on the list of things to do before Christmas!) /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
The Plowden is good food but is all cooked to order so if they are busy you have to wait a fair while. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

we often do the circular walk from Henley along the river to aston and then back through the hills.

details can be seen here

walk pdf

you do pass the flower pot at the half way stage and the walk usually takes us about 2 hours. It's a great walk as you get to walk the length of the regatta course and then you divert up in the hills were there are some stunning views and you often see red kites above you.

You could continue along the Thames having crossed at Mill End (Hambledon) and then head up to the top of Ferry Lane to The Dog & Badger - now an Italian but suspect the pub is still the same.

Alternatively, the bus service (I kid you not!) between Henley and Marlow is very good and runs every 30 minutes. You could walk to Marlow for a really healthy walk and then go into one of the pubs in Marlow - I can recommend The Two Brewers...then bus back to Henley. Depends how "posh" the hotel is. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thank you all just needed a memory refresh, marlow is out as its too far and they dont do busses, I worked in Marlow so know it well, Henley my memory is a little rusty.

Went to the dog and badger recently for Sunday lunch on this occasion it was excellent but others have had a different experience.

Thanks again!

Well that someone was me..

Two nights Hotel du Vin which was exceptional (huge bath on the balcony...) then long walk as per your suggestion which was great, the Stag and Huntmans in Hambledon was superb with a proper fire, food and beer then off back over to Aston to The Flower Pot that has not changed, excellent ale and a good atmosphere then back over the hills whilst watching the red kites, cant believe I have never done this walk before thoroughly recommend it!
