The BBC were talking about new Marine Protected Areas being designated to protect Minnie Whales and Basking Sharks in Scotland. These are great creatures which we want to continue to see in our waters. But I wondered what specifically is proposed to be done to help them.

Turns out it is a Public Consultation only at this stage, but strong likelihood they will be enacted as proposed. See document https://www.gov.scot/publications/a...rine-protected-areas-scottish-waters/pages/1/

There is a lot of bureaucratic wordage, and difficult to find actual specifics proposed. But I do worry slightly about what this might mean for boating. For example
- in a number of places a key management requirement listed is to minimise/reduce collisions of vessels with the species of interest - Minkie Whales, Basking Sharks, Russo Dolphins. But I have not found anything which actually gives evidence of numbers of collisions with vessels currently. Is this a real issue? And the proposed management measure is a vague “implement best practice for collision avoidance”. What does that actually mean?
- pleasure boating is listed as having a tiny impact cost - if I read correctly £1,000 (over 20 years). What is this and is it reasonable (sounds very implausible, likely either zero or much bigger)
- pleasure boating is not even one of the activities mentioned as happening in some areas such as The Shiants, whereas this is an important anchorage and staging post between inner and outer Hebrides.
(The above are approximations of quotes, as too difficult to swap between large document and YBW on iPad without losing place)

Anybody know who is involved with these from a sailing perspective?

Alan, I commend your efforts in trying to make sense of this. From my purely selfish point of view, I'll be long dead before this has any impact and I have doubts any restrictions will be policed.
Loch Creran has had protected status (well, a bit of it has) and a quick google has failed to find anything that describes what restrictions are in place and my latest chart, certainly post-dating the protection, has no information.
So far dolphins, Minke, Humpback and Killer whales, basking sharks, porpoises etc. have managed to avoid a collision with my craft without any action on my part and that goes for puffins, guillemots, shags, cormorants, seagulls, eider duck, shearwaters, etc. - the only exception to this was a gannet that tried to fly between my genoa and mast and clattered the shrouds. Quite how I could have avoided that I dinnae ken.

All up the west coast there is a massive whale chasing industry, some pretend to be doing research while carrying paying passengers but all spend their time following cetaceans around so that day trippers can get close enough to get a photo on their phone, all sorts of craft, converted fishing boats, motor cruisers, big 12 passenger ribs. The trips are expensive but I suppose the season is reasonably short but I firmly believe they should let their victims get on with their lives in peace.

Well said :encouragement:
Most whale watching countries USA.,NZ, Iceland all have policies that now must be followed to protect the Wildlife, i.e in NZ only 3 boats at a time may approach and must be so many meters away. same in Tonga when I went for a swim with Humpbacks and ended up meeting a tiger Shark:ambivalence:
For normal lesiure boaters you will find no real restrictions , it is for Dredging, fishing and Wildlife tourism that will be effected the most, which is the right thing to do , IMHO:D

Ban everything and reinstate serfdom. That'll show em.
