Providing gps repeater with nmea 0183 info.

Hello wise and goodly. Or badly as long as wise.

On my refit I am not planning to use a chartplotter, rather a large tablet running navionics.

I have an em-trak 924 for AIS that i used to great effect in my old yacht, presto, with navionics. The em-trek has nmea 0183 output at the baud rate i want 4800. It has an inbuilt gps unit.

I also have a standard horizon vhf, also with inbuilt gps and nmea output of 4800.

My question is around my desire to fit a navman gps repeater instrument on my instrument cluster. This takes nmea 0183 input at 4800 baud rate. I have had two of these before and whilst crude i love the speed over ground and course over ground readings they give. I think they assume being given the nmea data from a chartplotter.

So my question is, will the outputs from my em-trak AIS and standard horizon VHF be sufficient to drive the SOG and COG needs of my navman repeater?

I have read the manuals of all three. It has told me that i can connect them, the baud rate to use and the cable colours but the manuals haven't said whether either the vhf or AIS units emit enough gps data to give my navman repeater a happy time.

Just curious, I always thought AIS's worked at 38400 baud rate ?

I’m sure if you check the manuals for the devices, you’ll find a page detailing which sentences each broadcasts. That’ll give you your answer

I have an almost identical setup, but with nasa repeaters. To maximise redundancy I use the emtrak to feed the tablet (which, for extra redundancy has its own GPS, disabled), and feed the repeaters from the vhf. Works perfectly.

you can choose 38k or 4800.

The question really is - which output sends not only GPS coords - but also SPEED and COURSE data from the GPS position calcualtions ? I don't think thr Navman repeaters do the calc ? They are just looking for the sentences to display.
