My new boat came with a second alternator powered by the propshaft.

Initially, I thought it was an unobtrusive alternative to a towed generator for downwind sailing.

The boat is also equipped with an Aero6gen wind generator and 2x50w solar panels which also contribute to the power balance.

Now, after the first season, I am quite doubtfull about the propshaft alternator:
- I have been unable to measure its output (not so easy to do!), but it seems to be negligible until the boat reaches at least 5 knots of speed.
- it's noisy!
- the belt wears rapidly and the propshaft has a tendency to unbolt itself from the coupling (not sure if the alternator is the culpright, will also check shaft alignment)
- obviously, it's incompatible with a feathering propeller, which is very much tempting me to avoid having the propshaft spinning and whining for days on end.

Anybody out there with an experience to share?

TIA

Very strange thing to have on a shaft with a feathering prop, sounds like they were optional extras fitted by people who were talking to each other!

(however if you take it off and want to sell it I would be very interested!).

Regards Nick

No no, what I meant is that I would LIKE to replace the existing fixed prop with a folding one, but that would obviously make the propshaft alternator useless....provided it actually IS of any use!! (and that's what I am trying to find out)

better check to make sure your gearbox is happy spinning around without the engine running - a lot of gearboxes dont like it.

I have never heard of a successful propshaft system.

Get rid of it and fit a folding prop. If you need more electricity get another solar panel. You will be a lot happier. Life will be quieter, and the boat will be faster.

A friend of mine had a propshaft alternator. It worked ok when sailing at good speeds, but on two occasions the couplings on the shaft became unbolted, presumably from vibration. One of these nearly sank the boat, halfway from the Canaries to the Cape Verdes, a very lonely piece of ocean. I would vote for getting rid of it.
