\'Proper\' Burgee\'s

OK - this was prompted a bit by a post in the Lounge but I've been meaning to ask for ages.

My Dad has a proper burgee. That is he can hoist to the masthead and it flutters away quite the thing. He doesn't have any instrumentation at the masthead other than his tricolour.

I know he has a length of bamboo with a piece of bent aluminium which swivels over and down the bamboo and holds the burgee.

Question is - where can I buy a proper burgee holder to go on a length of bamboo (or similar) for my Moody 346. Dad cant help - he got his about 40 years ago and cant remember where from /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif.

TIA

Re: \'Proper\' Burgee\'s

If you have the length of bamboo, it is not a great problem to make the rest yourself.
Get a wire coat hanger.
Form a small round eye on the wire, this will be the top.
Bend a right angle below this, then at a length to suit the height of your burgee, make another right angle bend, back to the same side .
Then form another larger round eye to finish.
The bamboo passes through the large eye, up to the small one.
You then need a couple of brass washers and a brass woodscrew.
Washer above and below small loop, and fasten the screw into the end of the bamboo.
It helps if you cut the bamboo across a "joint" as at that point it is solid not hollow and holds the screw better.
The all you need to do is stitch your burgee to the vertical length of wire.
Hope this is reasonably clear and it helps

I have made a few like this over several years and they last pretty well.

Okay,, stupid q Iam sure,,, but how do you get the lot up the mast pointing vertically.....

Re: \'Proper\' Burgee\'s

Arrrr well thats all due to the position of the top block and the set up of the line on the bamboo plus the type of line you use as a halyard or hoist for your Burgee staff. None stretchy stuff is best.

Re: \'Proper\' Burgee\'s

Make sure bamboo is plenty long enough to project your burgee well above any masthead encumbrances such as VHF, plus enough additional length for attaching the halyard.
Fit a small block or just a smooth eye at masthead to run the halyard through - you need a bit more than twice the distance from the cleat to the masthead -
Then attach bamboo to halyard with 2 clove hitches, try the first about 9 - 12 inches up from the bottom, the other near the bottom, then hoist carefully

Burgees have an amazing habit of finding corners into which they can get stuck during the hoist, but with a little practice you will soon have your burgee flying proudly at the masthead.

This is of course the "proper" position for a Club burgee.

Re: \'Proper\' Burgee\'s

Two clove hitches on the stick for hoisting holds the thing vertical - assumiung as has already been pointed out there's some downward pressure on the halyard. I made mine from lengths of dowel I got from a DIY store and varnished them up. Wooden sticks have huge advantage of floating over pretty custom made (and expensive) alloy examples. I used thin brass rod to bend around - came from a model shop - less of a rust problem. OF
