Propellor Nut (Castellated) Torque Setting

I had a new propshaft made by T.Norris Ltd and when I went to collect it it had a Nyloc nut instead of a castellated nut. I got them to drill for a split pin and fit a castellated nut. Not because I didn't trust a Nyloc, which of course I do, but because I would have had to carry a spare since I would not re-use a Nyloc nut if I had to take the prop off for any reason, whereas split pins are cheap and readily available and I always have an assortment on board.

Thanks. I'd like to drill an 'ole in the shaft-end, but 'in situ'. I'm more than a little puzzled how I could do that 'reliably'.
There must be a way.....

Apart from the general awkwardness of the area you are working in, the main difficulty in using a hand-held drill as opposed to a drill-press is drilling diametrically and at right angles to the axis of the shaft.

Also you are drilling into a screw thread so the drill would tend to be deflected when you start to drill.

If I were you I would fit a new Nyloc nut when you refit the prop after cleaning and save the cross-drilling until you next have the propshaft out; when it could be done accurately in a drill press.
