Dear All. Currently doing up an old boat and took propellor off recently as it was covered in barnacles - removed the barnacles and wire brushed back to base metal. Surveyor said dezincifiction significant and propellor did not "ping right". I have attached photos and would appreciate an opinion as when is it time to get a new propellor. There is no signs of the propellor being brittle or cracking anywhere

right now !

surveyor was right !

props dont crack, usually, just a chunk of blade fly off or the whole thing.

The damage round the centre boss shows how weak the metal has become. more strength in swiss cheese!

I would try grinding at a point where it won't upset the balance of the prop to see how far the pinkness extends. The boss would be ideal. You may find the normal colour takes over in a millimetre or so. You could maybe then try on the blades, but go very carefully. I have seen props that were a lot worse still functioning but it does look like there isn't much life left in this one.

I would get it to a prop repairer like Steel Developments, and ask their opinion. They will tell you if it is worth repairing, and if there is anything wrong with it.
