Prop walk which way?

I sail a lot of other peoples yachts on deliveries, tests charters etc. It's not always easy to see the prop. As soon as I have a bit of searoom I take my hands off the helm and give it some revs to see which way she walks. I do this both in forward and reverse until I am happy that I can predict which way she will walk and by how much.

Reason I asked before trying the boat is that I need to commit to a new berth next week before I make final decision on the new boat a Beneteau 25.7.

As it has twin rudders I wont be able to use prop wash when coming into the berth so just wanted to check my thoughts ie it will kick to port when I stop it, The new berth is a port sde too one. so that will be ok.

If I don't change boats new berth is fine with my curremt boat. Just more room width wise.

/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Doesn't it depend on which way you point the bow??

In marinas one is often expected to approach in a particular manner - or so I am told. Similarly in some river quays, one always approachs the same way as the stream has a constant direction.

It is going to depend on the boat, the conditions and your preference. If I want my cockpit away from the main drag I go bows in first and so I am portside-to. If the wind is blowing the other way it is easier for me to come in stern first so I am starboardside-to.

It isn't a "portside-to" berth - it is just a finger pontoon which doesn't have a preference /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You may find with the Beneteau 25.7 that there is not masses of prop walk anyway as the prop is well below the sea surface and not too far aft. (if I have the right yacht in mind) Prop walk is most evident on props in keel cutouts and well aft such as on my Vancouver. Low speed manoeuvering is one of the drawbacks of twin rudders. The only way round it is a "softly, softly catchee monkey" approach when berthing - and plenty of fenders. When it comes to it wind may be a more significant factor than prop walk.

If its a saildrive, you probably will not have any propwalk.
Just park with stern into the breeze.
