Prop Shaft

I need to know the diameter of my propshaft, in order to fit a rope-cutter.
The boat is a Jeanneau Fantasia, with Yanmar 1GM engine. In the survey the shaft diameter was stated to be 7/8 inches, but being a French boat and Japanese engine, I'm not sure whether the shaft will be imperial or metric (apparently it makes a difference with the cutter).

Can anyone help with this, other than using techie things like micrometers?

A "vernier caliper" will measure it for you, if the boat is still in the water you can measure it where it comes out the back of the gearbox. A vernier caliper can be a bit tricky to read but if you study the scale long enough it will make sense!

If it measures 25.4mm it is a 1 inch prop
If it measures 25.0mm its a 25mm metric prop
If it measures 22.225mm its a 7/8 inch prop
If it measures 22.00 mm its a 22mm metric prop

If you can't get hold of a vernier caliper Screwfix have a cheep one which I have seen and is not bad for the money. Part number 17933

Hi, besides a surveyor, I also own the company thats the dutch importer for the famous Brunton's Autoprop self pitching propellers.
Jeanneau Fantasia 27 /1GM10 originally were fitted with 7/8 shafts. Little room for rope cutters between p brack and prop though.

But you can fit a spacer in the flexible coupling which should give you enough room.
