prop shaft renovation?

Is it an economic proposition to renovate a 1 m x 25mm prop shaft by having the worn areas built up with metal spray and machined? If so, does anyone know who does this work, preferably in Kent or nearby?

I've seen references to it being done on fishing and motor charter boats, but perhaps for a small shaft it wouldn't be worth it. Seems a shame to scrap a shaft that's not bent or corroded and is more than large enough for the power it handles.
 
I haven't had to order a new shaft before and got the idea from somewhere (possibly an over-priced dealer - that it would cost a lot more than that - obviously mistaken. Can you suggest a supplier?
 
i had a 1 1/4 inch shaft made in Ipswich ( it was 7 yrs ago i admit ) but it was around 6 ft long machined one end for the max prop ( not a taper ), made next day
cost around £100.
much less hassle than re-metalling the old shaft, you mush have a local machine shop capable of this simple job.
 
I had one made when I went to a three blade prop about 7 years ago. T.Norris advertise in the mags but not the latest YM. They knew the exact requirements for the Bukh DV20 and of course the taper for the prop which they supplied. It cost about £50 at the time.
 
Hi, you could try Lake Engineering at Hamworthy, Poole. I believe they have them partly made up ready for final finishing to size. I bought a 1" x 44" shaft recently for about £110. They have a web site but I don't have any info to hand but you could google them. Hope this helps.
 
I can only agree with those that advise not to re-furbish.
For a "25.0"mm shaft, check it is not 1" (25.4mm) Won't be the first person caught.
