I've just noticed a plastic reservoir and pipe leading down to my stern-gland with clear yellowish oil in it. The reservoir is empty so it's just the foot or so of plastic pipe which has any left.

I'm wondering what sort of oil I should use to fill it up again.

Slightly embarrassing to own the boat for 9 months without noticing this arrangement but my last couple of boats have had a no-maintenance deep-sea seal and an old-fashioned greaser with tap respectively.

Any thoughts on the oil-type?

Sounds like a Halyard seal...

The Halyard seal has a plastic reservoir with 2 pipes on it (one at the bottom, one at the top). This seal uses ordinary engine oil.
