Prop shaft nut required

Happy new year to all!
can anyone tell me where I can get a bronze prop shaft nut from the internet? I have to replace the existing one. Also how do determine size required, I have the old one however its in two bits! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

If you tell us what the boat & engine is, someone here might know the size. Metric shafts tend to have a standard taper and a nut size determined by shaft diameter, so the latter is a good starting point in determining the nut size. Best method however is to measure the diameter of the threaded part of the shaft and use a thread pitch gauge to determine the pitch. Most modern boats appear to have metric threads. You also need to specify whether your prop nut is a plain one, or the type with a cone end and a smaller internal thread to take an anode.

Its a Atlanta 8 metre with a Kabota 17HP engine its a standard brass nut, no anode.

The nut should be bronze, not brass. The latter is a copper zinc alloy, which will lose zinc and become brittle if there is any electrolytic action. Proper bronze is a copper tin alloy, but this gets confused because so called "Admiralty bronze" is in fact brass.

Try Anglia Stainless - despite the name they do a comprehensive range of silicon bronze machine screws, nuts and bolts. However, because (I think) they are sourced in the US you may only be able to choose between UNC and UNF, which will mean resorting to some Zeus thread tables to check you are able to order something suitable. As Norman says, don't use brass on something like a prop shaft nut (or indeed any other fastening on a boat).

Hi all , thanks for replies, you are quite right Norman should have said Bronze....old landluber throwback saying Brass..lol!Great forum for us novice owners knowing you guys are out there for advice !
