Can anyone help please with renewing the bearing at the prop end of the shaft on our 1985 Maxi 100 (similar to Maxi 95)?

The "cutless" bearing is about 56 mm long and has an annular bulge on its bronze case. The bulge is held in the stern tube by a bronze ring with rubber packing, screwed tight by two stainless screws with 1/4 inch hex sockets. The internal bearing surface is a brown hard plastic-type material, with no rubber.

I haven't tried yet, but the brown bearing looks as if it would knock out of
the carrier, in which case it would be about 30mm external diameter, on a 25mm stainless shaft.

The shaft is worn at the "cutless" bearing, and the bearing is worn too. I
think both need replacing. I can have a new shaft made, but I can't find a source for the bearing yet. Any ideas?

This sounds like a Vetus bearing - Most marine engineers should be able to source a replacement. The complete housing complete with the internal bearing surface should be removable. I don't think you can buy the bearing material seperate from its housing as it is bonded in.

Recently bought a new cutlass bearing for my Sabre,
It was made of Tufnol and did not have a bronze surround, took the
old one with me for size, but marine engineers could not match it,
after trying everthing they had in stock they rang the manufactuers
who could turn out one to match for a extra four pounds,
This was all done by Marine Trak at Mylor Dockyard really good service
oh, total cost was £ 44 for a one inch shaft,
hope this helps,
mike

Ian - I've looked at ASAP but there isn't room to install a rubber cutless - their od is too much. The holder has just 30mm id on a 25mm shaft. I looked at the Tufnol site - and emailed them asking if they can help.

I can send you a photo if you're interested?

Thanks again - MikeA
