Hi, I have been running my volvo penta 280 stern drive set up with a left hand rotation and porp. two weeks ago I started it up, put it in forward and it went in reverse. so now forward is reverse and reverse is forward. how can this be. it changed rotation by its self. HELP!

Highly unlikely that your direction of rotation has changed, I would start by checking your control cables and levers. The gear-shift leaver usually has the option to move the cable in both directions so something may have slipped or come adrift. If that is not the problem check the shift mechanism on your leg.
Good luck.

Easy: The Volvo gear selector can turn two ways to accomodate LH or RH props. If it flipped to 'wrong' side by accident it will work opposite.

Remove the shield to fix it. Make sure it is adjusted accurately.

Get the manual here:

see pg. 41

The symmetric arm on top can attach both ends and rotate to engange Rev og Forwd. If you detach the link and engage the various settings, you'll soon understand the principle by turning the prop :) (remember:NO ignition on engine while turning the prop!)

Has the prop been off,it is possible if you try hard enuff to fit the short hub 280 prop on the wrong way round. !

You are almost certainly correct .

Bit complicated for me at this time of the morning, but managed to fit handed props on my twin outdrives on the "wrong" leg, went backwards when forward was engaged.
Managed it twice on two consecutive liftouts.

That's a different matter altogether.
When you said "if you try hard enough", I also understood that you meant with the hub reversed (thought that did sound weird).
But as D_S said, that wouldn't have reversed the thrust direction.
By switching the props in a twin setup, of course you get the result you're describing. :)
