Does anyone know a decent place to get a set of duo props repaired, south coast or home counties? Mine have got some cavitation errosion on them and corroded through in one place. Also where do you go on the web for cheaper Volvo Penta bits, typical stuff like anodes AQ205, filters etc, or hopefully not propellers!??

Also this has baffeled me..... but my manual says I should be checking the outdrive oil every 2 weeks. Problem is that the top of the leg is always under water, am I missing something here or is there another way of checking levels in 290 legs on the back of a Fairline Targa.

Look forward to your comments

you can not check the levels under water so unless you lift the baot or dry it out you have t accept it
main reason for checking oil is to check for loss or contamination either from shaft seals, gear change or drain plugs or ingress through leaky drive bellows
look out for any tace of oil in water when moored indicating leaks from drive or hydraulic rams
best course is to make sure the bellows are changed regularly and that the jubilee clips are fitted with screws in right positions as in the book

try castle marine in Wales for prop repairs i

I've had my duoprops repaired several times by Steel Developments, and excellent service too. http://www.steeldevelopments.co.uk.

Keyparts are good for anodes and spares, though oil\air and breather filters etc are standard auto parts, just take the model number in to your local car accessory place and you'll save a fortune. Oil, is up to you, any good oil that meets the spec quoted will be sufficient. MG Duff are supposed to be good for anodes though not used them, but heard good things about them.

My Duoprop manual just says to check the outdrive level every 100 hours, but I've got the same problem as you in that the dipstick's under water. Have a party and get a dozen or so friends to stand on the fore deck and hence lift the stern up. It's the only way I've found to do it

I agree with the Steel Developments recommendation. Have used them as well. Very fast, very good, fair price.

You say "cavitation errosion on them and corroded through in one place". Have you checked to ensure all is OK re anode protection? My impression from your words is that you are describing more than the usual small pitting....and if the anodes aren't sufficient, other more valuable metal bits are being sacrificed....

Thanks for the advice everyone. i particularly like the party idea so if your near Southsea...... All the anodes are corroding at a 'normal rate'. They've erroded by about 2/3rds over 12 months. Interestingly this stb leg the anodes were less corroded than the prt leg, and its the stb fwd prop that has suffered the damage. There is no evidence of other damage on the legs. I've heard of an engine anode but can't find one any ideas where it might be lurking?

Cheers again

Well on the AQAD 30 it's at the front of the engine on the left hand side under the inlet mainfold though may be different location on yours, but it'll be a 1/2inch square head, probably brass, but may have been painted if original equipment

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like you have an anode (or lack of) problem.

Might I suggest you make contact with Chris Harris of M G Duff (anode manufacturers and who sponsor MBM - 01243 533336) and ask for their advice. They are really helpful and seem to know everything to do with every boat and their appendages....
