Can anyone please explain as to wheher I need a right hand or left hand prop on my Volvo outdrive. When I bought the boat it had a left hand. in the Volvo book it says left. Volvo technical help says right because of the way the flywheel rotates and another book I have says a single drive needs a right hand prop. Before I go changing things which one should I have.

If you bought the boat with a left and it drives why change it ?
Tech help is good but they havnt seen it , so it could have a thingy that changes the basic tech thingy.
If you leave it on the left and it doesnt work dont blame me im talking from my outboard :O)

Virtually all single engined boats are right hand (clockwise when viewed from astern) - hence the transverse thrust (paddle wheel) effect when going astern is to pull the bow to starboard. I find it strange that yours was left handed - I should check very carefully on this.

Well it does not really matter with a single engined boat. Except, if it was wrong, you'd be going backwards instead of forwards, would'nt you!!

If it works, dont fix it would be conventional mobochat wisdom.
The gearchange for forward/reverse is in the outdrive and you can change the 'hand' by altering the linkage in the leg.

Does,nt matter which way it turns. My ones left handed. If you've got a 200 series drive the can be set for either right or left. Volvo did it this way so the same drive could be used for twin installations without having to manufacture 2 drives.
As far as the flywheel goes. If viewed from the stern it will be turning anticlockwise any way. So the techy peeps are telling you lies anyway.

There taking crap. It dont matter. As long as when you select forwards, the boat goes forwards and not backwards, how this is achieved is erelivant.

Dave - does the boat go forward when you put it in forward gear? Does it go backwards when you put it in reverse gear? Have you run the boat over the summer with no problems? Has the stern come in when you want the stern to come in? When reversing off a pontoon, has the bow come round the way it should? Have you had any trouble mooring at all? Does the boat pull the same revs as it did at the start of the season (discounting the fact that the hull maybe/is dirtier then when you first went in the water)? If the answers to all the above are yes - discounting your own boat handling skills/forums/images/icons/wink.gif - then LEAVE IT ALONE - IT WORKS!

Isn't having a left hand rotating prop (on a single) a bit like wearing your keys, dangling from a belt loop?

Well it was worth asking. You always get interesting answers even if they’re a little vague in the sense department.

Anyway my boat does not pull full revs and I need to try another prop as it would appear to be over proped so maybe I will stick to left or maybe I will try right. All depends on what I can get at what price.

As someone said, they make these both left and right handed, so Volvo's answer doesn't sound right. Don't change the prop however, becuase if you do you will need to select reverse gear to drive the boat forwards. You must not do this (disagreeing with LJS here) becaause the thrust bearings in the leg are set up so that only the correct forward gear should be used going forwards. If you use reverse gear to go forwards your leg will fail in a while. This is totally different from most shaft drive set ups, where forward and reverse gear are interchangeable (which is how shaft drive boats are set up to have counter-rotate props when both crankshafts are rotating the same way)

Don't talk rubbish. The bearings in the lower unit on a 200 series drive are tappered roller bearings. The backlash is taken up with shims. The only thing that needs doing to change from left to right hand opereation is to change the linkage, under the cover, from one hole to the other.
