Mmm, I'm now starting to agree with you. You know how there are many restaurants in Croatia with their own dock or mooring buoys and normally you pay nothing for staying the night provided you eat in the restaurant? For me, this is one of the delights of Croatia. Last time we were on our boat 2 weeks ago, we decided to visit Pipo's restaurant in Uvala Luka on Brac. We picked up one of the restaurant mooring buoys in the late afternoon and much to my surprise, somebody came and charged us 300kn, despite me promising to eat in Pipos that night. In the early evening, the wind got up and the buoy became uncomfortable so we decided to move to Pipos dock. Again to my surprise they charged us 500kn for that; when I pointed out that we'd already paid 300kn for the buoy, they reduced the charge to 400kn. So we'd spent 700kn at Pipos already without even eating there. Then later we ate in the restaurant and my wife and I had a seabass between us which was priced at 400kn/kg (which is already much too expensive). When the bill came, they charged us for a 2kg fish when there's no way the fish was much more than 1kg. So, all in all, our total bill for staying and eating at Pipos was over 2000kn. So, yes, Balkan Bandits do exist and one of them is running Pipos restaurant on Brac
In fairness, a couple of days later we picked up another buoy in Lucica also on Brac. Although we were charged 300kn for the buoy, we ate that night at a new restaurant there called Barba Luka (or similar, its the restaurant to the left of the other 2) and the meal there including sea bass was absolutely superb and half the price of Pipos so not all Balkans are bandits
We were at Pipo's last August but anchored in the northerly arm of the bay so at least we saved on buoys. However, Pipos was described in our guide as expensive so we weren't too surprised at the bill. The new restaurant in Lucica sounds interesting as we have eaten at the other two and enjoyed the "fish or meat" experience.

It is not necessary to travel so far from Monfalcone, any small commune out of the tourist trail will have a local restaurant that serves a workman's lunch during weekdays (only) and most will be good, simple cooking in the local style for that same price. Of course one needs a little Italian to decipher the list of available dishes on the duplicated sheet placed on the table against which to place your cross of choice. Or it could be a little more difficult as in the tiny restaurant I also visit when in the small village of Porto Negaro up the Fiume Como, frequented by the dock workers, when the pretty waitress gabbles the choices and waits expectantly for you to mumble the first dish you recognised. But whatever turns up will be good, so it doesn't really matter, especially when it is served with a genuine charm and friendliness common to such establishments of the region.
But then, I think you are a man of taste and discernment who may be offended when the first empty plate is removed to find the used utensils placed back on the table for the next course. You could also be confused by the single water glass when there is both a wine and a frizzante water bottle on the table; standards have to adjust. As fine dining for me is but a faint memory of international corporate travel I have embraced my days of simple cuisine with deep enjoyment.

Its still a "fish or meat" experience but exquisitely cooked (at least for us) with chips to die for in a delightful setting

I don't think so! When I visit my manufacturer near Pordenone, we nearly always eat lunch in the kind of working man's restaurant you describe and it's just as good as any fine dining restaurant as far as I'm concerned and a whole lot cheaper

Actually they called them french fries but they were more like saute potatoes but so delicious the SWMBO and I argued over the last one! Ask for the grilled veg too. I forgot; if you phone them, they'll come and collect you from your buoy in their dory

Heading back to the boat on Friday. Not been since 1/7 ascension.
I'm all 'Croatian VAT paid' etc now and decided to get a new annual Vignette when last out in May. As nobody knew what was going to happen about that!
Anyone been out since know if we still have to do the 'crew list' thing for new UK passengers ? ie go to harbour master and get them added to Vignette.
Or has that gone away ?

I have been told by a couple of people in the Croatian boating industry that the crew list procedure is no longer required but I have no official confirmation of that. We were on our boat for a few days around 1st July and were not asked for the crew list in the 2 ports we visited. In fact we weren't asked for anything other than money. Personally I'm not going to bother with it anymore at least until I'm told otherwise
