Hello

just bought a boat and picking it up tonight, but was wondering if there is documentation that proves ownership of the boat.

thanks
Richie

Bill of Sale together with same for every time the boat has changed hands is usual. Part 1 registration also gives prof of ownership. About as good as it get with boats.....

there's nothing mandatory and a lot of boats are either completely unregistered or just registered on the Small Ships Register (Part III) which has no strong legal significance.

Part I registration does give a pretty good proof of ownership, but it is relatively expensive and bureaucratic to do - most banks and other finance providers will insist on it but it is less common on second hand boats that have not been purchased with a loan.

sorry for the late reply and thanks for all the reply's

the boat is a microplus

Unlikely to have anything "official". Best you can hope for is a Bill of Sale or receipts showing some history of ownership up to present owner. Low value boats like that are unlikely to have any charges registered against them. Useful to get the current owner to sign a Bill of Sale (sample on either the RYA or MCA websites) as you will then have some evidence that he signs to say he has a right to sell free of any charges. Chances of it not being his to sell are very small.
