I have posted problems on the forum of a semi seized top swivel after only 4 years.
I have been informed by a rigger they do fail often, though are guaranteed for 10 years, but not the labour for replacement.

I would like any other forum members who have in fact, have Profurl systems on their boat to give their opinion of their system either good or bad.

This I will use to either tackle Frofurl themselves, or infact have a replacement of another make fitted.

Useful advice of you other systems would be appreciated aswell.

I have a pro-furl system. Used extensively over the last 15 years ( we live on board most of th etime and have sailed to Med/Africa and back) - no problems very pleased with it. I regularly 'service' it - every time I take the jib off (usually every month or so but never less than 6 months) by washing in fresh water and liberally squirting with silicone grease. Never had any problems.

I would question your riggers judgment and get a second opinion. I am on my 3rd set of sails since fitting the profurl but still the same furller (apart from the furling line):D

temptress

how do you lubricate the top swivel as there is a sealed bearing under?
I have tried to lubricate it as it was very stiff but to no avail.
I was recommended this make of furler due to its bullet proof nature but for some reason I am having problems.
I do wash out the bottom drum with fresh water every so often but the top swivel has only been inspected.
This started to stiffen after the second year.
I have notice the rubber sealing the bearing is cracked.

any more ideas?

bob

I have a profurl so old that it only has a single sail groove and I have had it for nearly 10 years with no problem.

The top bearing should be sealed and will not need any additional lubrication providing the seal is not damaged which it seems yours is if you say the rubber is cracked. If this is the case the bearing needs replacing PDQ.

I squirt (soak) the whole thing first with fresh water then silicone grease spray - and swivel it around - seems to work for me fine - not had any problems ever with the furler. Can't say the same about the selden system it replaced....
